John Byrne passed away on Monday. John was a great friend and mentor to many of us fall turkey doggers. He will be greatly missed. I met john at turkey trot acres in about 1990. I was there to fall hunt with his legendary Appalachian turkey dogs. That experience changed my life as a turkey hunter. Now it was only four months between turkey seasons instead of ten. His mentoring quickly turned me into a fall turkey hunter. Because of him and his dogs Ohio is now a state where fall hunting with dogs is legal. Because of his influence on me Ohio now has a seven week fall season. He was the one that introduced me to the wind instrument with his wingbone turkey calls. The first time I ever heard John call in the woods with that wingbone I knew I had never heard a call that realistic in the woods. Many of us have lost a true friend.

That is sad to hear but what a contribution he made to the world of fall turkey hunting. He will be missed and his legend will live on forever.  May the Good Lord Welcome him into his Kingdom!! *prayer*

Marlin, It sounds like John was a big influence in your life as well as Scott's. The two of you enjoy the up coming fall season and keep your memories alive  *prayer*

Marlin, when you spoke of John and told those fond stories of him, his dogs and your hunts I could see and hear how much and how deep he reached you.  Celebrate his life and the time you were fortunate to spend with him...he will never forget you either.

That's sad news. I've never fall hunted but read few articles about Fall turkey dog hunting and Mr. Byrne as it's something this southern boy has always wanted to do. We have lost several turkey pioneers over the last two years.

Mr. Watkins, sorry for the loss of your good friend. Sure would like to hear some more stories about him and the dogs.

Bill: yes the bloodline will continue. John's son J.T. and his wife Cathy have been handling all the breeding for the last few years. Cathy takes better care of the pups than some children are cared for. For Myra and i these dogs are not only my hunting dogs but our family pets as well. their a hoot as house pets. this two year old "Cutter" that we have will keep you in stitches.

I was very saddened when I heard the news early Tuesday morning. He is in a better place now, with Jr. by his side. Although I only knew Mr. Byrne since 2004, I enjoyed talking with him and listening to his stories, especially fall turkey doggin'. He left behind a legacy, and like JT said, a "huge pair of shoes to fill".  R.I.P. "Daddy" Byrne.....gone, but definitely NOT forgotten! And thanks for giving me my best hunting buddy ever!

Bob and Scott put it well....he will be missed by you guys that were close to him, but we all know he's in a far better place now.

Thanks to some great friends I got to spend some time with "Daddy" on two seperate occasions while chasing turkeys in N.Y. His story telling, humor, and wisdom will be missed greatly by family and friends. Look up true southern gentleman and John Byrnes picture will be there! Gods speed. Marlin, Scoot and Pete hang in there buddies.

Sad news ...I am so glad I have had the chance to experience fall turkey hunting and the pleasure of hunting behind 2 of Mr. Byrnes dogs...
