NY opener report
« on: October 01, 2009, 07:25:12 PM »
I headed up to NY for the opener with Dcoleinpa. We didn't hear a thing off the roost so we relocated with the same results. As we worked over to an area loaded with acorns we heard some birds in front of us. They went quiet so we waited them out for awhile. We got up and started to move towards a field and heard birds off to the right. They worked into view and worked their way directly in front of us and then headed down the logging road in our direction. They worked within 15 yards and Dylan didn't have a shot, I had a hen in my sights and shot her. We got a decent scatter with some birds going to the left and some to the right. We moved up the road a ways and began calling. After about 45 minutes a bird clucked off to the right. He came out in a clearing 30 yards in front of us and then went back in the woods. He came back out at 35-40 yards and Dylan dropped him, a nice big Jake. After cleaning the birds we headed back out and got a group of gobblers to respond to some aggressive purring. They stayed out of range and worked their way up the hill. Should be a good day tomorrow.

Mark, I'm not sure what either bird weighed but Dylan's was hefty. We walked for what seemed like 5 miles in the same area today and didn't even hear so much as a cluck but it was still awesome being out there chasing them. Going to hunt the Pa bow opener tomorrow and then it's back to NY on Sunday to get after some birds.
