Last day of Ohio Spring Turkey season .
« on: May 31, 2012, 01:38:44 PM »
Well this has been a tough year for hunting turkeys due to the early spring weather . But it has been as enjoyable as any year in the past . I was fortunate to bring quite a few birds into the calls even though most had little interest somedays. I watched 8 toms fall to the gun for myself and a couple friends. I was able to hunt three states and spent over 60 days afield since february. I enjoyed a fabulous trip to Florida to hunt with good friends Ed & Taylor . Roamed the Kentucky hills until I got my bird, and spent many beautiful days in the rolling hills here in Ohio . I feel blessed for everything God put here for us to enjoy in the wild.
On the last day of our season , I hunted with my long-time friend Joe and we weren't to be disappointed that day . At first light we started hearing gobbles very close to us so we worked our way to a pasture that was nearby the closest birds . We set up on a short , narrow pasture and waited for fly-down . When everybody had spoke their peace, we had 6 toms in the trees in front of our set up . Shortly after they hit the ground I started working the calls sofly . On this hunt , I ma armed with my very special mahogany shortbox made by my good friend, Jeff McKamey . And to finesse 'em  , I brought along my limited edition Lamar Williams aluminum potcall . Within about 20 minutes we had a longbeard sneak in from behind and let out a single cluck . Joe eased his gun around enough to drop the bird . His turkey weighed in at 22 lbs , 10" beard and 1" spurs . We sat back under a cedar tree to enjoy the moment and suddenly another one of the Toms fired up 100 yds away . I readied my gun and soft called with the box  and then a little sweet talk on the aluminum call . It didn't take long and this fat Gobbler strutted in front of us and I took him at 20 steps. My bird weighed in at 23 .5 lbs. 10.5" beard and 1 1/8" spurs . Both were nice 3 year old gobblers in prime condition . I'm already looking forward to fall season ! Thanks to Jeff and Lamar for some great calls for this hunt !!

Congrats Bob, that is a fine looking gobbler and you used two great callers and look at all those Shade Trees in the background!  Great picture and the fall will be here before we know it!

Congratulations Bob
