I have to admit , this has been one of the toughest seasons so far due to the early warm-up . I have had a good bit of luck but it hasn't been easy . Here's a bird I killed here in Ohio last week . Caught up with him in a small field where we have obseved gobblers every day . I was working two toms with a poplar/ canarywood fencepost call and they were on their way to my set-up when this tom slipped in behind me and stepped out at 10 yds. Needless to say I forgot all about the other toms and rolled this one. After the shot I called to the others and they both came in strutting for 20 minutes . This one weighs in at 23 1/2 lbs. with a 10 1/4" beard and 1 1/8" spurs on both legs . Along with my call , I used a Shadow Turkey Calls Tom 2-timer glass and slate call and I did some sweet talking with the awesome poplar/redheart Whole Grain Boxcall that my friend Scott Witter made for me. Ive worked several birds with these calls this spring and we aren't even close to being done yet !
I gave the field a rest for two days and I went back with my hunting partner on Sunday and I called those ather two toms back into range for my friend . I ve had 5 toms working this field and I plan to get back on em tomorrow !
The poplar fencepost call pictured will be donated for the Benefit for Kinsley along with the cool purple bracelet that I have worn on every hunt this spring . Hopefully it will have a few more notches in it before it is auctioned off . Thanks for looking ! Good luck to everyone chasing tough birds this season !
