Title: What's on your list to carry to the woods?
Post by: Jake St. John on December 30, 2010, 08:30:07 AM
I will clarify this question.  At the beginning of the season, the amount you carry is more than half way through the season.  So this would be your mid season to end of the season essentials.

My hunting partner wrote about this, but his list consisted of the beginning of the season list.  I always go with the same items every year, and it is the Mid season list.

One opening day about 10 years ago we were hunting Franklin Co. and staying at our hosts lodge.  My hunting partner came down from up stairs and I said,  "Well you look like Santa Clause  just getting ready to open your pack."  He said, "It's those 3 boxes of yours that I tote.  It fans your coat out when you put them in the pockets."

Let's see your Mid seasn lists.  I am Curious. :)

I will start it off with my list.

5 shells, 2 sets of gloves and facemask( I am always losing one when I get stuff out of pockets), folding felcro saw to cut big blind material, small hand brush clippers, trailer tire tube without the needle valve out, but has the cap(to blow up and sit on comfortably for a couple of hours), small maglite, compass, belt knife, small fold up umbrella,  duck strap carrier to carry the bird out, water bottle,  East of the Slash Box Call, Gator Gobbling Stribling box, assorted diaphram mouth calls(that I can use, but rarely do), slate call, and this year I am adding an Erb Trumpet.  Also over my back besides my Remington 870 is a 5 stake, ground blind on 5 yards of camoflage material

I forgot to mention mosquito dope.  I carry a can of killer to spay the area, and the regular stuff.  When the water goes down on the Ms. river,   I have seen gobblers coming through the woods, swinging their heads to get the mosquitos off.  It can be like smoke rising with a low roar when you walk this time of year.  I have seen birds stay on the roost till 10:30 or 11:00 before they pitch down.  They hate the devils too.  *lol*

I like Charlie's list, I try to remember shells. I put them in my pocket because they tend to fall out of my vest. When I remember, I put them in the gun. Nothing as frustrating as calling in a gobbler in full strut 30 yards away and realizing you didn't take care of that little detail before the first call.

Along with all above mentioned, Ill be taking more water and something to eat! I think I'd have stayed longer on a couple hunts if I'd took water.LOL. I never remember to grab those frozen water bottles in the freezer.

No one planning on using decoys? ???

I have them but only use them if I'm field hunting. If I'm in the woods I leave them.

Calls:
I will have one each of pots: copper, glass, slate, ceramic, & aluminum
1 long box, 1 shorty box, 1 trumpet, & an assortment of strikers.

FIRST AID KIT!!!, bug spray, water, high energy snacks, cell phone (in case of falls etc...)
extra batteries, memory cards for camera

Mine varies a little as I will switch calls very often just to change it up. This is what I finished the season with last year.

3 shells. - If I can't kill one in 3 shots, I had just as well go to the house I figure. :)
2 pot calls.
4 or 5 strikers.
One box call. I have been very partial the last couple of seasons to a wenge/chestnut one sider I got from Randy Carswell a couple of years ago. I also have a couple of Mr. Robert Clifft boxes that always see a lot of action.
1 Hooks mouth call
Folding saw.
Ratchet pruning shears.
Thermacell is a must here in late season. I wonder how I ever made it without this thing.
Michael Buckner crow call.
Primos peacock call.
Cheap HS Strut owl hooter I have had for years.
Extra battery for my red dot.
2 pairs of gloves.
2 facemasks.
A small fold of camo cloth material.
DSD Hen decoy.

I am sure I am forgetting something.

Clint

everything but the kitchen sink.....

mid season gonna be carrying a Don Watkins fiddle paddle, BBbox call, 3 or 4 mouth calls, a 3" slate and crystal, (my own creations, the more calls the more chance i got to get an ol gobbler to be interested), my old mossberg, camo, water and lastly and most important a butt pad, (seat)....

I got tired of watching turkeys run away from them . Sometimes they work but why take a chance on spooking them off ? Plus , that makes less stuff to carry around the woods  *lol*

I carry the DSD hen decoys. I have seen my decoys attacked by hens, jakes, and gobblers. I did stop carrying my gobbler decoy. It ran a couple nice gobblers off before I stopped using it. *lol* *lol*

Chad mine is almost identical except no mouth calls (I sound just plain terrible on them.  Daryl took mine away from me in Kansas a couple of years ago).

Now come on...  didn't you watch the commercials where they just run to them!  *lol*  I had the same experience.  I was tagged out and wanted to give it a real test.  I was laughing so hard when that bird saw the decoy.

I had a decoy get destroyed by a bull.  That was funny :)
