Title: Does Any One Know
Post by: Hobie on February 18, 2014, 11:36:35 AM
Does any one know who the trumpet judges where at The NWTF convention this weekend?

Job, I'm pretty sure Bill Henkel was one of them. As for the rest, I'm not sure. I know the NWTF had a hard time finding judges. Due to the weather keeping so many of the original judges from making it. Bill can probably tell you who the others were.

For turned trumpet it was Brian Mero, Wingbone was Steve Lumma, Jordan was Austin Bott

And the guy ahead of you wanted to know who won and that is the answered I gave him.  Previous post suggested you contact Bill Henkel  on who the judges were.  I was not there so I have no answer to that question.

Five judges. Arnie Jonathan, me and Shawn (can't remember his last name). He has judged the trumpets for several years. The other two, I have never seen judge, before. One was a woman. Charlie Burke said, because of the weather, he had to scramble for judges for all the working calls.

i don't think it matters how many times a person has judged...what matters is that the person judging is proficient with the call or callers they are judging....with that being said..kould the "new" judges play ??

The trumpet category may not be the only category to suffer from having qualified judges.

I don't think the other categories suffer as much as the trumpet/wing bone/Jordan, division. Getting (qualified) judges has always been the most difficult for that division. JMO.    And I don't think tube calls, should be called (classified as) locator calls either.

I will say this, I know the box call division did not suffer by having alternate judges. I know 4 of us were well qualified to judge and from what I saw of the 5th person he did a nice job of judging. I wasn't with him on every call he played, but I did watch him for a bit, just to see how he ran the calls just for my curiosity. I think we all did alright.

I agree Bill. It is the hardest division to find judges for. For as many people as we had that couldn't make it, I think Charlie and his staff did a great job in getting judges lined up.

I would love to do the tube call division
No way are they just a locator call they are a tool just like all the other calls. You can use them from locating until pulling the trigger

That's exactly why the call maker in the air operated and all categories should be judged running his/her own call behind a curtain in front of a panel of copetent judges. Until this happens it's nothing short of a circus....

A maker running there own call is absolutely ludicrous. Call numbers would be down and like K said, you would be judging the caller not the call. Part of the criteria is ease of use. You can't judge that without having your hands on the call. And yes, that is an important part of the criteria.

If you don't have a clue what your judging are you cannot play a particular call.....well you can throw that ease of use out the window.....

I totally agree the maker can run his calls better than anyone, but  that still doesn't tell me how easy that call runs for me, or what I as the user can get the call to do. Don't forget, the maker doesn't use the most of his calls. His customers do.

I rotated myself from box calls to trumpets and then the NWTF started asking me to do more. Don't get me wrong, new judges are needed, but it doesn't help for folks to ridicule the hard work that most of us do and then cry when the NWTF has to reach into the *poo* to get enough judges for each category. That part of this discussion, is nothing but, counter productive!

I don't have a dog in this fight because I haven't TO DATE entered a call but IMO having a call up there where other hunters are running and playing with it will bring you just as many customers as that ribbon does or more ? Think about it 30,000 or so people vs. the auction room...  as long as everyone hears a different sound I don't know if this problem will ever be solved... Ever listen to your recorded voice? sound different doesn't it. A box call in that building isn't going to sound the same as one in the woods.

Is the call maker building calls for himself or for his customer? And, which judge do you want to impress? A human judge or, a long beard? Confusion seems to run rampant at times. Personally, I'm after the gobbler and not the human.

Bill, I don't care to rotate every year, but I don't think I can run a trumpet good enough to be able to judge them. Therefore,  I do not volunteer to judge them. Don't get me wrong, I think rotating would be great, but how many of the judges are capable of running all the types of calls good enough to judge them?  Very few. I will say this and then leave the subject alone. Complaining about this on a forum will not solve anything. There are plenty of people willing to my mom is ugly about it, but none that are willing to either step up and go to the NWTF with their concerns/ideas or step up and be a judge. They would rather hammer on those of us who do judge.

I understand and I wasn't trying to point a finger at you, either. I was simply saying that just like a calling competition, judges can soon figure out who it is running a call. We then, are back at the same place, with no solution.

The judges were not to smart. They were as bad as the people who put the calls in the different divisions. I sent a Jordon trumpet. Marked it a Jordon and they placed in in the decorative cat.   If the judges were that smart they should have picked this up. I sent a decorative trumpet and they placed in in the Jordon.    I mean these judges have been around long enough that they should have known the difference between the two. But what do they care. They didn't put all the work and time into making the calls. And spending the money to entering them. All you got out of the people there was that they were sorry, there was nothing they could do that they were already judged. I am not saying that I would have done  better. It was the idea what they done. It was the older judges that should have picked this up. Ernie

Honesty, is the best policy. I don't think rotating will work either, for the very reasons you expressed. But all this complaining isn't getting more folks to step up and judge either. Nor is it going to change anything, at the NWTF! But then, we have been through all this BS before. It got us from point A to point a.

Actually, I have to take issue with that. I pointed out to Charlie Burke that very issue (calls being placed in the wrong category) . I was told to leave them where they had been placed. This was before they were judged!

Sorry to hear that they lost your call. That stuff happens way to often. About 8 years ago I purchased the D.D. Adams winner and it was stolen right off the table. Only judges and call makers were allowed behind the tables. All I received was the striker.

I was  chairman for several years of the Nationals and the Midwest competition and also judged for many years.
I took my own responsibility to find quality judges and was never a problem until the "chiefs" wanted to do it. After all the friction and animosity, I retired. I did add/replace SOME judges each year to get a new/fresh non-bias group. SOMEONE ELSE HAD BETTER IDEAS. It wasn't worth the BS and my expenses. I have since offered to be a judge in the hunting call division, but they have never excepted my offer.

Regarding this years trumpet winner, Brian Mero, He has earned top award at the Midwest, a few years consecutive; also past winner for the Jordan award, earning both 1st and 2nd and the Turpin Award. This year he earned top honors and 3rd. Must be a legitimate reason. I have hunted with, played hundreds of yelpers and the best of the best do win awards, except for Billy Buice, and maybe Rev. Zach who do not enter..

We can NOT downplay everyones effort for your callmaking ability. To earn an award, you need to be remembering that ease of play, and tone are tops in my judging, not who made it or who the maker is. Mr Burke was wrong in not being bl to recruit great judges among the thousands that , as well as attending  the convention , own and play and hunt using yelpers. As far as putting calls in a different division, *cry* *cry*.
Complaining here may get read by the right people and maybe they will take note in the future. I apologize for any hard feelings, and maybe someday, judges will again not care who made the call, etc. and return to honesty, integrity and proper people judging that can play a call. I had each judge play the calls from the division before they would be excepted as a judge. Many did not pas that test. Bill, and Scott and beyond them I am not aware of the others, were utilized when I was around. They are great judges. I question if one of the current chairs and staff even can play calls to the ability to run the show.

I SAY AMEN!

All this ease of play talk pertaining to trumpets and wing bone calls. What does this mean to you..?  I've been thinking about this all night...
To me, a call will have to play softly with one hand and as loud as I want it to with both both hands and sound good ( like a turkey) at those points and  everywhere in between. One of the few factors that I can think of that fall anywhere near ease of play would be an angled mouth piece. I personally don't like an angled mouth piece and never found them easy to play, but some folks do. A call without a lip stop to me would not be easy to play, but I'm guessing all entered have those. What does ease of play mean to you as a trumpet player are judge.

And I don't think tube calls, should be called (classified as) locator calls either.

Bill

That is a joke right there, there can be 3 categories for suction yelpers which maybe what .0000001 percent of the population actually carries but tube calls are delegated with locator calls.. SMDH   With that being how do you judge a tube, construction and design IMO is the LEAST important part of a tube call.. A film canister could win..

As For Judging With the lack of folks qualified to run the things why not split the judging up kinda like a above.. Have 2 qualified players run the trumpets and they score only in the section for ease of play and than have the rest of the panel be blind and judge on sound alone..

I'll speak a little about ease of play regarding trumpets.

I have never been a judge in any call making competition, only a competitor.  I agree that there should be competent judges but the weather in Nashville seems to have been some blame this year.  What we probably need is a very dedicated core group of good callers to choose from.  Your guess is as good as mine as to how exactly this could be achieved.  I very much appreciate the judges who are competent and attend every year out of their own good will and funded by their own wallets.

But to me ease of play is how easy it is for anyone to pick up a call and run it at least good enough to be successful in the woods.  With regard to trumpets I like it when I can get the lipstop set right and be able to get a nice roll over yelp within the first yelp or two.  On some yelpers I have to move around and take a few extra yelps to "get on it".

I have been judging the decorative calls for some years so I will only speak to what I see as problems that need to be solved in that division.  I will say Charlie Burk has my respect, he is working with the resources the NWTF gives him.  It is a thankless job!  What I saw during the judging was mass confusion with the scoring program, computers and printers, with the IT guy running from one to another.  I have not arrived to the welcome dinner before 8PM the last three times I judged due to computer problems, and this year we started an hour earlier.

Ernie,  I saw your Jordan there and questioned why it was placed in the decorative division.  The answer was "that's where we placed it".  not the first time for the same answer.  Brings to mine the old saying " A card laid is a card played" Tough to deal with when some one else is laying down your cards.  I had my problems too over the years with entries.  Once $800 was copied onto the silent bid sheet as $500, at least a friend got a steal.  This year it was the text on my tube call's description card, that the NWTF stresses you put with your call, had the last and an important sentence left off in the premier auction program.

Hope some one can explain the following to me:

The decorative rules are written thus; to judge the 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each class, the 1st in class is chosen, then it is pulled out and the second place call from that category replaces it. The calls are then rescored for 2nd best in class and so on for 3rd.  When I asked why the places are not chosen from all the 1st place category winners, I got, "That's the way the computer program is set up."  So if the 1st and 2nd class winners are chosen from the same category, and you came in 3rd in that category you might have a shot at a class 3rd place, beating out 1st place category winners in the same class.  Sound confusing?  Am I right?  Read the rules and set me straight if I am not.

Some needed corrections at the Premier Auction;

All category winners should be auctioned off first, then class winners, special awards winners and finally best in show.  Auction them off in the order that they were judged.  Not too difficult.  This will keep bidders in the room and interest up until the auction ends.  This year bidders left the room after the some of the special awards winners and best in show bidding was complete leaving some of the category winners chosen to go up to the auction to pick up left over $$.  Poor business practice.  The NWTF lost revenue for themselves and the call maker on this one.

Calls at the auction need to be placed, smaller calls in front, larger behind them.  That's just common sense.   Some of the smaller calls were partially hidden by larger ones especially if they were behind one of the presentation sets.

I have already vented myself verbally to those in charge and will follow up with a letter.  This year's convention has past.  Hope things improve next year.

Make your voices heard!!

I can run any call you lay in front of me with a pretty high level of skill...and do it blind folded so i cant see who the call maker is. Be judged totally on sound and ease of play.

Ill be glad to judge, just need to ask.

All that is needed is Competent Judges, Ran the same as the Stage callers as far as judging.

Each judge is a competent player, and each judge scores each call entered privately, scores are added, a winner picked.

How much easier could it be ?

There will always be the people saying this and that, can't get around it.

Competent Judges, Judging the calls they are competent in running.

If you wish to judge, you must volunteer.  The NWTF will send you a letter asking what division you would like to judge and some other info.  On second thought the letter was included in the entry packets.  Karen Cavender is the person to contact, she is a pleasure to deal with.

After long deliberation I feel I have come to the only reasonable conclusion in regards to judging.  I think we should have the NWTF trap a group of Wild Turkeys and put them in a large circular enclosure.  Each call maker will have 1 minute to entice as many turkey to within (x) feet of the designated standing area.  Most turkeys called in Wins first, second, etc.  Then the turkeys will be relocated to Florida for their service to the NWTF and enjoy the weather and create another hybrid subspecies.  Since I thought of the idea I will also be sent to Florida for 2 weeks to assist with acclimating them to the enviroment.  Sounds reasonable.

Would never work after coming to the 1st caller the birds would be call shy and would hide on the other end of the enclosure.

Maybe the call candidates now will need to wear turkey costumes and do strutting dances to lure the wild judges to them.  It's really starting to come together quite nicely.  No feeding the birds allowed!!!

This whole discussion has and will forever be debatable, arguable and questionable.  What's next...judging the judges to sort out who was competent and proficient enough to be a judge?

Then you'll have argument there too.  I know and have heard argument that this person or that person was a great caller/player and come to find out they weren't as great as lead to believe.... then wonder how in the heck they were credited as good callers.  It'll never be perfect or full proof.  Too many opinions.

Example, I have heard of guys who were top notch players and when I finally got to hear them for myself..... they weren't as good as I was lead to think and sometimes even sucked.  When learning to play the trumpet I was told a thousand methods, beliefs and techniques and then heard feedback from all sorts of people only to find out about 75% of the feedback and teachings was garbage instruction from folks who themselves couldn't even play them and I was lead to believe they were the guys to go to.  Just my 2 cents on it all.  Good luck sorting it out.

Can somebody tell me which category a tube call should go in? I would also be willing to judge the trumpets if it works out with my schedule.

Well, with about 8 tube calls in as locator calls, the NWTF says...................locators. Maybe, goose calls?

I'll bet I could easily call geese with a tube call.  I sound much more like a goose with a tube call than a turkey.

Probably tube calls IMO I think there should be at least 3 categories maybe one for bigger tubes, one for shorter.. Or even do categories for the material built with Metallic, wood and other..

If suction yelpers can have 3 categories and hardly any turkey hunters carry one and the vast majority of folks asking "whats that around your neck" Surely the tube can get some love.

Well, Job...........according to Harold Knight, the tube calls they first developed, were for goose calls. That was around 1970. They later put a lip rest on that same call for turkey. I heard from other sites, that the tube call has been used for goose hunting for many years prior to that.
