This call was built for a fellow callmaker and lifelong turkey thug from the deep swamps of Mississippi who tells some of the best turkey stories ever. This call was built to memorialize one particular hunt for The Crossroads Gobbler. I will not attempt to recall the hunt, I could never do his story-telling justice and thus the images may seem odd to some, but it is my hope that the callmaker will feel I have etched the memory of his hunt with appropriate accuracy. The box is figured Walnut over Yellow Poplar with Red Oak burl for end blocks. Both of the images were derived from photos sent to me and the hunter's call, An East of the Slash Stribling Turpin was actually sitting atop the dead gobbler slung over the log just as I burned it.

your right Scott---no one can recall and tell a story like John...I can sit and listen to his tales all day long. Have actually heard that story from John himself some time ago before he asked you to memoralize it in a call for him. John picked the right callmaker for his request no doubt....the call is great , but as always the artwok is great friend. You did Johns memory justice---I am sure that call will hold a very special place both in his heart and in his trophy room the rest of his life.

On a personal note and while I do really enjoy the wood burning, it can sometimes get tedious and a little repetitve, but this was a fresh change for me and IMO, the scene with the gobbler slung over the dead log is the best single scene burning I have done. I was torn as I neared completion that it would look odd standing alone with no context, but given the circumstances and not knowing the natural surroundings of the actual scene, I just wasn't sure how I could tie it into a natural setting, so rather than take away from the gobbler, I decided to leave it alone. Again, I hope Mr. E likes it. *up*

Scott, you just immortalized my most memorable hunt and bird in 34 years of hunting them. I cannot tell everyone how I dream of that old bird slow walking through that intersection. You captured him in intimate detail my friend. I get choked up, just thinking about harvesting a bird like that. My hat is off to you. As we discussed, this is why we build these calls. For someone else to enjoy them. I plan on making a few more trips to "The Crossroads" in the next few years, just East of the Slash. The Crossroads Special will be with me on every trip. Truly, a call I can pass down to my son.

The prettiest gristmill I know of is the Glade Creek mill at Babcock State Park in southern West Virginia.

Scott you can google Squire Boone .... There's pictures on there of his mill. Since the wood is tied to him, would be kind of cool to use one of those pictures. Again Great looking call *bowing*

Wow! That is just fantastic, Scott. I especially loved seeing the pictures you worked from. You did an incredible job creating scenes using the actual pictures. The turkey over the log with the box on him is perfect. I admire your work so much...the entire call...from the materials to the construction to the artwork. Looking at the call just transports the viewer to the turkey woods and the feeling of a successful hunt, and I think that is the measure of great artwork on great game calls.

Pretty funny Tom, but who ever said I was actually going to give it to him *peep* *peep* ROTFLMBO
Mike, I gotta tell ya, the woodland scene was hard for me...I think because John's story painted so much more of a story that I was nervous the whole time wondering if I could even come clsoe to what he had stamped in his mind. If you look close, a key element of the scene and the actual hunt was the large tree on the left a Cottonwood I believe, and if you look very close you can berely make out John's gun leaning up against the tree on the left. John had fallen asleep after hunting the gobbler all morning at the base of this tree and then was woken by a thundering gobble as the bird came walking down the two-track, he ended up shooting him while lying down beside it.

Every word the truth Tom. About the hunt and being wasted. The older I get, the more help I am going to need in the woods. Kinda like driving 4 wheelers I guess. *lol* Scott did not get his call in Nashville from me last year. I think I showed it to everyone and actually took 8 or ten order just by showing his call off. I ended up mailing him the call after Nashville. Turn about is fair play with Callmakers. *lol*
