Swan Hunt 2011
« on: January 01, 2012, 06:59:09 PM »
This was my 2nd year for making the annual trip to North Carolina with Don Bald for a Tundra Swan hunt.
We hunted over 8 of Don's hand carved decoys and a couple of dozen fold up shadows that his friends in NC have.  There were eight hunters the first day and we stayed for a second morning to watch another group of four hunters fill their tags for a total of a dz birds taken.  The bird I shot was a large mature swan that I am going to have mounted.

I don't do as much waterfowl hunting as I once did but seeing hundreds of these majestic birds in the air at once is an experience that I will never forget, the company and scenery was as good as it gets as well.  I was able to meet some great guys from NC and look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
Here are a few pictures from the hunt.

The German short hair belongs to the son of a gentleman that was kind enough to put us on the swans.  They went quail hunting while we were swan hunting but were back in time for pictures. 8)

The calls were made by Don, they are a custom made swan call that sound very good in the right hands.

I'd imagine they make a pretty impressive thud when they hit the ground..  Neat hunt...
We had a single come in first thing and let the youngster next to me have him all to himself, when he peeled him out he made a "thud" 3' in front of me.  We all laughed as I side stepped in the ditch not knowing for sure if he was going to bounce down in with me. :o
