Rhythm or tone?????

I've been listening to all of the good "cd's" out there the last month while building calls in my shop......there are some great recordings out there,.....there is no better way to tune a call than to "brain wash" yourself with all those real, true, pure turkey sounds.

That hen is an example of the faster rhythmed kee's and the two note kee's that I mentioned on my early post. You have to admit we are pretty close to what she is doing in that sequence. One thing to note is how she kee's and then listens. Kee's and then listens.  We're trying to cram a kee kee sequence in 1 minute......and man your right I love to just listen to them...all year long for me. We are close to some turkeys voices, but you know as real as we try to sound, I do not think that latex can reproduce that hen's rasp. I would kill to have her yelp!

....yep,..like i said, ..there are a few that are close,...but getting past that "latex" sound is extremely hard,....over the past years it seems that "rasp" has taken over the importance of the rollover and since rasp is easier to achieve on a call, you hear more and more of just a little beginning and then all rasp,...  I hear just as many hens that have that throaty, clear yelp (wingbone or trumpet) than all that nasty rasp.   But either way,..It's all great music to me

My vote goes to rhythm. I've heard turkeys that sound like ducks, crows, etc., but they still have the rhythm.

I agree with rhythm, but this got me to thinking...

Have any of you successfully called or have you witnessed anyone else successfully call a turkey into gun range on a call built for another animal?  Just how far out of tone can you go and get away with it?

Pat, I totally agree-I have been working my tail off practicing and "tweeking" my calls to carry that front note a little more noticeably in each yelp note.

Barefoot, I've never witnessed it, but I bet you could call a hot tom with a duck call if the rhythm was right. LOL

Listening to  Live turkeys and TTT , the bulk of the plain yelps are much as you described, clear front rolling over to slightly lower tone without a bunch of rasp..

You do that and the judges recognize it, you should score through the roof.. It seems alot of guys will hold it for a yelp or two and than whether its nerves, volume or whatever they lose the distinction in the high note.. They still have a front and back with rollover but the front end is hard to pick out..

If my memory is correct, Denny Gulvas does a very good job of keeping that front note in there..
