The game you refer to in 1996 was pre BCS and not a matchup of #1 vs #2 for the title as would be the case now.
Again, I don't see a rematch happening here. If LSU runs the table it's academic and they are in. I think the computers and polls will place an undefeated or possibly even a one loss OSU, Stanford, or OU ahead of Bama if they play and win their conference championship. The only way I think we see Bama in the NC is if LSU falls apart before the SECCG or if there is collusion among the poll voters.
I think the representatives of the respective BCS conferences would have a thing or two to say if a team(Bama) which didn't even play for their conference championship leapfrogged their champion in the polls. Which is why we need a playoff.
