Claro Walnut Burl Trumpet

Finished up another one tonight. This one is Claro Walnut burl with a Gemsbok mouth piece. Heading to a fellow Californian.

Very nice looking call. I'm just curious...why did you choose the "Turpin" look? There's nothing wrong with it, but that body style has been done and over-done, IMO.
I'm not trying to start anything or degrade your work(which looks great), I'm just wondering, why not develope your own look?

I'm still experimenting with making these. It's only the 3rd call I've made. I'm sure in time I will develop my own style. When I first started making pot calls they looked like everybody elses. Now I have my own style on pots and I'm sure in time the same will happen with these. I'm curious...did you start making your own style out the gate or did you start with a familiar style? You make a darn good looking call now, I've always liked your work.

Thank you for the response, Dave. You are WELL on your way with these trumpets. I have seen some beautiful and unique stuff from you...that's why I asked the question.
As for me, my trumpets have always been pretty close to what I make now. I had a rough idea of how I wanted them to look from the start. I just had to figure out how to put what was in my head into my calls. For me, I stick with the same style cause, some time down the road, I'd like for people to see one of my trumpets and recognize it as mine. Here's a pic of the first 3 I ever made.
You are doing very well with yours...keep up the good work!

Your both doing some real nice work . Mike I really like the look of your calls and Dave what your doing now looks awesome. I'm sure over time you'll change it up  aliitle bit but if you kept it as is the classsic lines are just fine. JMO but I think some times turners put to many curves and what not into the barrel and it just looks to busy to me. My art teacher used to say that simplicty is the essence of good design. I've never forgot that.  Bill

I agree, Bill, that simple classic lines are best, but there are infinate ways to stay simple and clean. I also agree that some calls are WAY too "busy". Dave is on a great path and obviously is a great craftsman.

so true.  some of them look more like lamp stands...
