Parquet with scrimshaw
« on: August 24, 2011, 09:23:09 PM »
I started this call in the spring and am just now getting done (been painting the house instead).  I have seen the wood combos on here any number of times (ebony, holly and maple burl), and I loved them, especially the ones Al and Josh have done, which are so much better.  But, I'd been wanting to try it for a long time.  The pattern on the sides I intended to look like turkey prints.  But my wife says they look like arrows instead.  I won't try that again.  I inlaid and scrimshawed some ivory pieces.  And I did a little checkering on the handle.  This is really the result of hanging out on this forum and trying to learn from the likes of Lee (Frozen Crow), Al and Josh and others.  It's for one of my best friends, who I grew up hunting with.

Oh, it definitely disappoints sometimes, Lee.  I couldn't get a bird in last spring to save myself.  One morning three toms sat on the opposite hillside strutting in the sun while I called to them for like an hour before I finally just got up and chased them off.  They didn't seem to give three hoots about the scrimshaw on the lid;).  Next year.

This is a solid looking call and I too see turkey tracks not arrows.  The work on the handle adds a really nice touch and of course the scrimshaw work speaks for itself!

How does it sound?  If it matches up with the appearance then you have a sure winner.  Thaks for posting and keep them coming...the house can wait *bannana*

It sounds fantastic, which I wasn't expecting.  I didn't have any idea how ebony and holly would play together, even though I've seen the combination posted here.  But (with chalked lid) the sound is just great.
