Scratchboxes from the ShadeTree
« on: August 23, 2011, 08:09:19 PM »
I was asked by a friend of mine if I would help him make a scratchbox for himself . I got on a roll and made a few of my old style callers . This is made like my Grandad used to build them . It is a gunstock scratcher, also called a slave scratcher because it was rumored that a slave developed the call originally . One is made from wormy ambrosia maple and the other one is made from the antique walnut salvaged in Eminence from an old hayrack . Thanks for looking !

Sharp little scratchers there. Ambrosia maple is one of my favorites.

That pretty lil Ambrosia Maple found it's way to my grubby little hands. After figuring out to run the box and not the striker, I am very happy with how this caller sounds.
Thanks Bob.

Yep,
Cup the striker between the middle finger and the heel of the palm.  Hold it lightly.  Hold the BOX firmly.  Bracing your hands/wrists against your belly gives even more control!
