Hen Bone vs. Jake or Gobbler Bone CRAZY!!!!!!

Not attempeting to throw a wrench into this debate, but the old timers use to plug the end of a gobbler bone w/ glue and then drill a hole to get the sound they liked.

Here you go trumpetyelper....Here's some gobbling on one of my wing bones with a hen bone mouth piece and on my ole style trumpet. These sound files were made recently by my friend Thor Kain from Pa,.........I only wish I could do it half that good. I'll keep practicing......

I have enjoyed all the comments in this thread. I am just a baby in the making of wingbone callers. The ID is very important of a good sounding, easy to use wingbone caller. I have calls I have made with different ID's. I have gobbler wingbones that sound great. The ID must be just right on it. It is a two bone caller. It was my first wingbone caller. I made it from directions I got from Jim Casada. I have a few other gobbler wingbones that sound great too. I have one hen wingbone which came from a jenny that had been hit by a car. It sound great too. The ID is a smaller that the gobbler bones. One thing I would suggestion of ya'll guysif you could convert your sound files to wav files. I can not play a few of them on this computer. Plus I can not download the software required to play them. Kenny your first sound file sounded great. See ya, Mike

I may be wrong on this but I think alot of folks use the gobbler bone due to there greater availablity. In North and South Carolina we do not have a fall or winter season so hen wingbone are in short supply. Therefore I use mostly gobbler and jake bones. In the south where I live the bones are not to big in most of the gobblers I have harvested. Buy I have made some from birds taken in Ohio and New York. They were made for friends turkeys. There bones were bigger than the birds in the south. Also I have tried the epoxy and drill technic but I did not likke my results. It could just be me.

THANKS FOR THE UPDATE NCTURKEY...I AM GOING TO POST SOME PICS OF GOBBLER BONES HERE IN ILLINOIS AND SNOW GOOSE BONESS.. NO JOKE THEY ARE 3 TIMES THE I.D. OF THE BONES THAT KP POSTED... THEY SIMPLY WILL NOT WORK.. THE BONES THAT KP POSTED LOOK GREAT..I AM ACTUALLY PMing WITH KP ABOUT HAVING HIM MAKE ME A CALL..

Just my opinion, but from a guy who's made quite a few over the years, if you can control the lip pressure, the internal diameter isn't all that important. With the correct pressure, pitch can be controlled. If anything, the tone might be a bit more hollow. I have no problem with a gobbler bone. I try to use smaller diameter bones, however, because they are more popular and, as this thread proves, most folks think it makes a big difference.
I think using a lipstop makes a difference in control and pressure, so try learning to call without one.

I have used wingobone caller as a striker for slate calls before. It works pretty well. Works on glass calls too. I have seen a few goose bone strikers made with a corn cob. Kinda works like a carbon stirker but not as high pitched.

I've never tried making a striker from any......I'll have to give that a try....I've got some REAL big gobbler bones that I use for lanyard beads on my wing bone calls....
