Tough day

I'm 6'4 every bit of 230 and I am biggest wuss on earth! This morning my wife and I took our oldest son to his first day of school. I figured that I would have to console my wife and it would be a quick in and out for me. After making the rounds and getting pictures we hugged him and tell him bye. I was fine at this point. We get to the door and turn around to see what he is doing and he just gives us this big smile and waves. Now, I don't care how tough you are or cool you think you are, that will tear you up. Laugh all you want, but it's tough when it hits you that your turning your kid lose to what's out there. My wife ended up asking me if I was okay by the time it was over with! I realized I was being a drama queen when she said "in 15 years of knowing you I've seen you cry twice," man your taking this hard". Figured I'd share that with you guys and own up to being a sissy.

I can still remember taking my youngest girl to her first day . You'll blink a couple times and he'll be graduating. Enjoy !

oh the emotions and feelings your children gift you with....we are blessed with them !!!!

I agree with Jeff.  I still remember the first day of school for each of my three kids.  The baby just graduated college, now that was emotion right there!

My three sons are 35, 34 and 30 and I can still see me crying my eyes out like a baby when each one started their first day at school! That isn't being a wuss, just love for you child!

I am right there with you. I put my son on the bus almost every day for many years. I think I hate the first day of school as much as some kids.

Hate to break it to you but it don't get easier. I was just thinking about school getting ready to start again this year and all the things I wanted to do during summer.

Mom's are tough and can't show weakness on things like this they drop them off and are ready to go, dads just can't let go.

I feel for you Adam. I have 5 children and my baby girl starts 4 year old kindergarten this year. Unfortunately I have only been able to take my youngest son to his first day of school and that was 2 years ago. I am excited for my baby to start school only because she is really excited. I am in full agreement with dpowers311 when he said dads just can't let go. It tugs on my heart strings to just think about how big my kids are getting and to face the reality that my oldest is going to be getting her drivers permit in 2 weeks. I thinks there should be a support group for dads that have gone soft. Wait, that's what everyone here is for.

Adam - As evident from all the previous post, it is a natural part of being a father and realizing your little babies aren't so little any more, and they will always be a special bond between a father/son and father/daugther. These feelings will remain, regardless of what life throws at you, and seem to get stronger as your children get older. My oldest (son) will be heading off to college in 2 years, and I am sure yours truly will shed several tears, after my wife & I drop him off and say our goodbyes! Kyle

Adam, absolutely for me the same...my daughter is now 16 and she'll be heading off to college in a couple years...based on the mess I was when she went to school her first day when she was 5, I'll need a dog-gone beach dowel to dry my eyes  *cry* when she heads to college.
