Ocellated Cape mount with Wings
« on: June 20, 2011, 07:44:03 PM »
My taxidermist did this cape and wing mount for me from my 3rd bird that I was not getting a full body mount on.  I had the 2 biggest birds mounted full body and was not sure what I wanted to do with this bird.  I am glad I listened to him and let him do the wings with the cape.  It is 3 separate pieces that can hang together or without the wings.  Cape mounts are growing on me more all the time, what do you think?

Thats nice, I'm doing a similar mount of one of mine and doing a shadow box with the other.  Got any pics of your full mounts?

Neat idea. My cape mount has the wings still attached.

I went with Snook Inn Outfitters based out of Campeche, Mexico  The bow hunting was excellent on the Mennonite property as they do not allow firearms so the birds were in mesmerizing numbers.  The guides and house staff were friendly, the food was good.  The accommodations were adequate for me but I sleep in the back of my truck on a lot of turkey hunting trips.  It is a hunt that I am glad that I did but truthfully I think it is way over priced for what it is in Mexico!

Chad,
Here is one picture I have but it really does the mounts no justice as it is hard to get a picture without glare through the glass.  It needs to have more lighting on it.

Thats very nice, I'd say you should be very happy with that!  Who did your taxidermy work?

As you know I went with the same outfitter and I agree that it is a very pricey hunt.  Its a very unique experience and I'm glad to have done it.  I'll probably do it again sometime, but it will be a while.

Dave Luke is doing mine, I'm doing a shadow box using a similar concept to his personal shadow box seen here..

I have a few empty bottles of liquor and an empty cigar box from the trip, some ancient Mayan pottery shards from Hochob, my guides used machete, and a watercolor painted lithograph from a late 1800's Ornithology book showing the Ocellated that I'll be putting in mine along with some photos.

Dave's shadow box is very nice and I am sure he will do a bang up job on yours as well.  I like how he incorporated everything.  How many peso's did it take to talk your guide out of his machete? :)  Be sure to post up a picture when yours is completed.
John Hinde co-owner of Whitetails & Waterfowl Taxidermy did my mount and yes I am very pleased with how it turned out.  I wanted both birds under glass to preserve them the best I could as I may never hunt them again as there are too many other hunts on my bucket list first.
