Ground blinds,......good or bad for the sport?

Pat, I haven't been hunting turkeys that long, just 5 years now, but I have bow hunted deer for the past 35 years...for me it's all about being in the outdoors and accepting whatever Mother Nature it offers so while I do understand the use of blinds and everyone is certainly entitled to their opinions and preferences, they just aren't for me.  I appreciate and respect the challenge that awaits me in the turkey woods and like the changing cover as the season progresses I feel a blind just goes against the grain.  I will say, however, now that I am almost 54, I can a time coming probably not all to far off in the future when a blind will be welcome in nasty weather.

I love em.  I only use them when I can set them out and leave them for a few days.  I like hunting on the ground just as well.

i grew up without such luxuries, i dont like them i like the feel of sitting out in the open while a critter i am huntin walks right by you within feet... the blinds seem to me to take something away from the whole expeience just me though....

i have 4 kids so a blind is always with me...not that i use it that often but it is there if i want it...as far as the ? at hand....do they help or hurt....in my opinion a blind can do both....they can be helpfull for taking children and also for newcomers...they do conceal you better and due to that you can get away with a lil more movement and error for the novice....on the other hand they can also lead to bad habits in the woods and a lack of woodsmanship and skill improvement...i take my kids when they wana go and sometimes may use a blind to help them be more comfortable and increase the odds that we wont be seen...but not everytime....i do go without very often to teach them that being still and patient is still very important when huntin anything...it also helps them to learn better setups and woodsmanship skills....blinds tend to make people neglect these things particularly when turkey hunting...to me blinds do not seem to spook them the way they do deer...i do not discourage people or look down on them becuase they use one or any of the other fancy gadgets on the market...and the biggest thing is we are supposed to enjoy the sport so if this helps some to get out and enjoy the outdoors then so be it...

I use one when I bow hunt...  I'd be in a tree if not for me being scared to death of heights.

When a shotgun is in my hand, I'm up against a tree so I can be mobile and ready to go. 

I do use them when taking kids. 

As for helping or hurting... i think it is both.  I have no dog in the fight either way.   Right now, they are so bulky it would kill me to carry them with me running and gunning!

Hey guys,...gathering a little information for an article I'm working on.  How do you think "tent blinds" are changing or have changed the sport of turkey hunting.  I'm not talking about youth's or handicapped (that's another subject).    The old traditions of turkey hunting,..sitting still, being quiet, being alert, calling them in close,..etc. etc.  ,..were those all important points, or can we just forget all them now as we sit in our tents, with a magazine, a sack lunch and just wait for one to come into the corner of the field?   What do you all think of them?

I do not look at hunting as a sport as it is our heritage and at one time was a way of life to put food on the table.  It is a tradition, privilege and honor to be able to hunt but I have never looked upon it as a sport.  The word sport means to compete and have a competition.  Basketball, baseball, football, hockey etc are sports.  There are shooting sports such as trap shooting, pistol shooting, skeet shooting etc but I know of no turkey hunting sports.

If you don't mind me asking Pat, what magazine, paper etc. are you writing this article for with the info you are "gathering"?  I will gladly discuss and or debate the topic of ground blind turkey hunting as well in later post.

And whether competing with a relative or close buddy, or in a Turkey contest on a forum, most hunters are competitive. JMO
