1st of the season.
« on: May 06, 2011, 07:39:37 PM »
I've been hunting this bird since opening day.  I've had a few to tell me to give up on him but I just couldn't.  He's been purdy vocal all season.  I've called him up and blew it twice.  2 of my friends have called him up a few times and blew it.   One of them shot at him 3 times!  He always seemed to like what I was saying but the real thing was always right there keeping him at bay.   I guess today was my lucky day.   I heard him gobble at 11:50am  right where he likes to hang out.  I never heard anything else until 4:20pm, in the same place!  I started calling purdy hard to him and had him gobbling good.  He walked all around me but never any closer.  Around 5pm he got the itch and decided to check out what was making all that noise.......I'm so glad he did.  Very exciting hunt and the first of the season for me.  1 sur broken , the other 1.25".  9" beard and a bit over 22 lbs.  Not bad for a mountain bird!   Oh, and by the way, I guess ya'll are wondering why I didn't go to him.... in my rush this morning, I didn't get my mask, gloves or camo shirt.   I had to set out a blind and stay in the blind! *lol*

Pshh, and they say a mature bird will only come to a call maybe twice in a life time. HA

Nice bird for sure as well as a great story to go with. Congrats

Great bird. I have forgot gloves and headnets but not a camo shirt. You had me laughing on that one.  *up*
