Sugar Maple
« on: April 03, 2011, 03:12:03 PM »
I just cut this one out this morning, sanded it smooth, then raised the grain, and sanded it again. I added a coffee stain to it to bring the curl and color out. This pot has some great color to the wood, black, brown, orange, yellow. I'm going to put a hand rubbed oil finish on it, the same finish I used when I built long rifles. I'll take some more pics when it's done.
Thanks for looking, Scott

Sweet looking pot. How's the coffee stain work done? Never tried it before.

What I do is save the coffee grounds out of the drip coffee maker in an old coffee can. That is about 5 filters full of grounds, I fill the can about half full of water and let it sit for about a month. When I want to use it, I pour some out into a old kettle and heat it up with a spoonfull of grounds added in. The hotter it is the deeper it soaks into the wood. If you want it a lighter color don't put any grounds in. Then just wipe some on, you can start sanding it right away if you want the harder wood to be lighter, the more you sand it the lighter it gets. It's just like if you were raising the grain in the wood. After it dries you can put on whatever finish you want, the oil will give it a 3D look.
