Shad's Pics Scrimshawed
« on: March 30, 2011, 10:59:24 PM »
Big thanks to Shad for allowing me to scrimshaw one of his great pictures on the top of this call.  It's the "seeing double" picture, Shad.  I owe you one.  The inlay on the lid didn't turn out so well.  I sanded the ivory almost through on one side, and it shows.

I inlaid an ivory carved turkey on each side.

And I scrimshawed a turkey head on one end and a whitetail buck on the other.  The box is figured walnut.  It's just a gift for my 77 year old uncle in S. Illinois who taught me to hunt squirrels some 40 years ago.  Next week I am turkey hunting with him and my dad for 1st season, and I thought I'd make something for him as a way of saying thanks.

I haven't sprayed with deft yet.  Have a few details to clean up still. But it's mostly done.  I know it's done when I can't stand making one more dot on the scrimshaw.

Man...I hope I have some pics like that to share, too.  And I will post if we do.  Season opens Monday in S. Illinois.  And, first thing I'll do if my 74 year old dad kills a long beard is snap a pic and post.  When I was a kid growing up in S. Illinois, there were very few turkeys around, and my dad never killed one (although he sure tried).  So, fingers crossed for a successful hunt.
