Surprisingly pike aren't quite what you'd expect as a fighter.  They unleash a ferocious strike but really dont fight much outside of some alligator rolling once they are at boat-side.  The big ones inhabit pretty cold water so I expect their metabolism isnt very high.

good point about the metabolism.  yeah, the strikes i've seen on t.v. are what led me to believe they would be fighters.

Just curious how warm a water you caught that pike out of? I've caught pike in water less than 40 and they fight alot different than warm water fish. Go after river pike near the spawn and you'll change your mind.

I caught the pike in Northern Saskatchewan only a few hours from the Northwest Territories.  The lakes had been thawed only a matter of weeks and we got some snow as well so I'd say the water temperature was probably in the low to mid 40's.  We had a good week that year, between the 5 of us we landed over two dozen pike at 20 lbs plus.

The blue tilapia(aka nile perch) are the very same you buy in your grocery store.  They are an introduced invasive species here in FL.  They are considered great eating, the problem is that tilapia are vegetarians.  The only time you can catch them on rod and reel is in the spawning season when they defend their beds.  At that time you can occasionally get one to bite a small jig placed in the bed.  The tilapia breed like wildfire and will quickly remove any vegetation in a lake or pond.  This makes good habitat for bass and minnows hard to find, as a result tilapia take over and effectively kill off other species.  I've cast netted for them a few times, its not uncommon to catch 100 or more lbs of tilapia in a single cast in some areas.  The commercial fishermen here net them year round and sell them to cat food makers.
