Time for a New Call?

Hello all,

Well us northern boys tend to rely too much IMO on the standard calls; box, pots and mouth and ya'll southern neighbors seem to have a good handle on the air operated callers such as trumpets, wingbones and yelpers.  To offer the toms something different...to hear sounds they know, but probably don't hear much in my area I was thinking of adding to my bag-o-tricks this spring to help break a wiley gob who is hung up or who struts too much and won't commit.  If you were to add a new call which would it be, trumpet, wingbone or yelper and what is your reasoning aside from personal preference?

I think it's hard to beat a good wingbone call made form Gobbler bones with a hen mouth-piece . I like the hollow quality you get from natural bone callers . Plus there's nothing like killing a turkey using a turkey you already killed ! Hen bones have a better fit in your lips than a round mouthpiece on a trumpet and have a smaller hole than gobbler bones which controls the air-flow better . Any good trumpet will work good for you as well , they tend to be a bit stronger and can stand up to field use pretty good.
 Don't overlook the effectiveness of a good scratchbox too . They are one of the most under-rated calls you can carry . The real benefit to them is that you can't really over-call with a scratchbox and they are used for the close action . I will purr and cluck on a scratchbox to drag stubborn gobblers out of the brush . They are a great closing call !

Thanks Bob, I hear ya on the wingbone--good points.  Scratchbox huh, well I thought about adding that to the mix, but I wanted to focus on the air operated callers, but it's no surprise you might mention the scratcher cause you are pretty handy making those callers and mighty handy indeed!  I just love your scratchers--in good time.

Instead of either a trumpet or a wingbone, you could go this route...sort of best of both worlds...



I am a beginner when it comes to these types of calls, still many hours of practice to go, but when I run it for someone, they react to the tone / pitch unlike any other call -- its almost like the sound from a trumpet or wing bone is like three-dimensional or something.  Hard to describe.

Well take note of the call-maker...A master for sure! I was just talking to another call maker who knows Marlin very well and he suggested the same--very tempting.

Give me til' may and I'll let you know what i think about trumpets.   You will probably need some time to figure them out..........but there are guys on here that can help you. Not me though.

my vote is the scratchbox.. but it's hard to say..any call could turn it around ...wingbone, trumpet ect...

For quite a few years I hunted with a wingbone and a box call. The wingbone calls are  in my opinion one of the most realistic sounding calls in the woods, if one takes the time to practice. I then discovered trumpet calls, and fell in love with this instrument, they are also an extremely realistic sounding call. Both calls take quite a bit of practice, so don't make the mistake of getting one a week before the season and think you will have it mastered in time for this years hunting, unless you're a natural on one.
If you do get one, keep it with you all the time, and practice a few minutes at a time when you have the opportunity. Remember, practice makes perfect, so be careful what you practice. A good tool is to record your practice sessions, this will help you eliminate poor sounding calling, when you hear what you want to hear,(turkey) remember how you did it and keep practicing that.

Air opperated calls use only AIR, not friction, to produce or MIMIC, the Wild Turkey.

 I believe Whole Heartedly, that it makes Quite a difference, on a 3 to 5 yr old Bird, Hung up, at 65 yrds, Standing at attention, starring, looking for that Bird that He hears, and not seeing it.

Those calls, can, and will, make the difference, more times, than not.
