I like 'em, & think they have a definate place in the vest ...

To me they are just a different sound. They do not have the distinct rollover. I have one by Jerry White and now one by Lonnie Sneed and they both make sounds just like hens waking on the roost. Anyone who has turkey hunted much has heard these tree yelps early at first light. These sounds are hard for me to duplicate except with these small slates. I have made these subtle tree yelps, slapped the ground with my hat like a flydown, made a couple clucks and heard wings flapping on more than one occasion. I have had gobblers literally land right in my lap.

I Like them!! I used them... When I set up by the roost site..light clucks, tree yelps, purrs..(Roost Pitting)...
To get the gobblers attention at first light.. ( Hey Big boy I am over here...)

     I ran mine allot last spring & fall, long after fly down.. They really do make the tree talk easy, but don't count them out for working birds on the ground. The pleading kee-kee's & kee-kee's worked wonderfully this past fall..

     I appreciate the smaller size as well.....Striker & caller in my shirt pocket & off I go....

     Don't under estimate the size of these calls and there abilty to project the sounds...It can, if ya want it to....

How close do you usually get?
Those first morning sounds don't have rollover. I'm getting one from Fred Cox that he showed me recently. It is slate with aluminum laminated on the other side.

Rickey I've done the same thing.  We had one drop right on us.  It spooked the intended shooter so much, he jumped and the bird saw him.  I couldn't keep from laughing 

One morning, I sat up right underneath a hen.  Didn't even know she was there.  I had roosted some birds the night before and she didn't fly up in that tree!  I didn't call at all.  I just looked up and watched her.  She woke up and shook her whole body.  Then those subtle yelps and clucks.  Like a person waking up that can barely talk and function first thing in the morning!

I do mine with my old box and and an old indian trick as my good friend Harley Metcalfe says.  Just run your middle finger up the middle of the back side of the hen side to muffle it and "Walla"  the best hen saying the first note of the morning with her mouth shut. "Tree yelping as I call it."

I will use one when I get a boss tom locked up out of distance and not wanting to play. It's not just for tree calling. I don't leave home without one.  I use them alot during the fall. I love to kee on one.
