Help making push button calls
« on: February 26, 2011, 07:48:20 PM »
Anyone know what the thin wood is that's in the bottom of most pushbutton callers and where I can get it?

most use 1/8" and you can get value packs on eBay, but I have 2 that used 1/16"

I was able to find some basswood in different thicknesses. Also, I found some very thin Baltic birch plywood has anyone ever tried that or have heard of it being used in push buttons?

Well, I presume either no one knows for sure what the thin wood on the bottom of most push button calls is or just don't want to expound what it is or how thick it needs to be. I understand why some callmakers that sell them don't want to tell what they use.

There aren't that many custom call makers I know of that make custom push pin calls on here. I would imagine the wood has to vibrate at the optimum frequency for turkey tone, similar to the sound board in a pot call. Thickness, density, hardness, etc. all come into play. Like any other call, everything affects everything, all one can do is experiment and take notes.

After what bulldogmikey and black falcon and others I have talked to have added to this subject I have found that several different woods including plywood of 3/64 to 1/16 inch thickness in an average sized push pin caller has the pitch that I was looking for. I appreciate all the input.
