Well just how far ?
« on: February 23, 2011, 05:46:22 PM »
How far can you hear the spit n drum ? I have good hearing for most common sounds ,,,I think . But the spit n drum eludes me beyond 30 yards . Too many years working in a factory full of huge electric motors humming and  air hose leaks,,,,,,,or maybe 30 + years of handgunnin'.
There is nothing I can do but get aggravated at myself for not protecting my hearing when I see a turkey spit n drum and I can't hear it . But oh boy ! When I do hear it ,,,,especially when I was unaware of a turkey being nearby ,,,that is sweet satisfaction ,,,,,I know he's close enough to shoot and I fooled him good . The last day of last springs season I was fortunate to hear it . He came walking up right behind me . I watched him walk away unspooked . Hey ! I could have shot him or at least shot at him , but , IT WAS EARLY AND I HAD THE REST OF THE DAY TO HUNT .

Great question there.  I've heard them from further than 30 before... I know one thing... I sure can hear it a lot further than Darlin can...  One bird was less than 10 yards from us and he never heard it spitting and drumming....  You never know about Darlin  *lol*

I guess it depends on your own situation, being a calm day or a windy day.
when it is a calm day you should be able to hear them as far as forty plus yards.

Well, put it this way...you know they are getting close to shooting range!

I don't really know how far I've heard them. Never really thought about it. I'm sure that weather, wind play a big factor. However, I know for sure I've heard them well past 30 yards.

Spittin & Drummin are one of two things, that make the hair on the back of my neck stand straight up....

Believe it or not, even with the rader dishes stuck on the sides of my head, I do not hear very well.....I know, when I hear S/D , they are darn close..... ;D

I heard one last week drumming in an oak hammock here is south central Florida.  He was 90 yards away when I first heard him.  I watched him for about 15 minutes.  I could still hear him at over 100 yards as he walked off into some cypress with his flock of hens.  There was very little wind that day.
