Not scientific by any means but I have been doing a lot of reading and research (informal) and it sure seems that a good copper call has a little "something" that gives it an edge.  in the woods. The feedback on our Copper calls, and the many other makers of Copper calls seem to report a lot of success in the field. It is my favorite tone in a pot call and while it is a little more difficult to master and is a high maintenance surface, in my opinion it is hard to beat as a surface. I would love hear your thoughts.

Mike,

I'm still not conviced with copper being a good surface for a hunting call.  I've used copper calls for five years and they just don't get the response that they should, at least here where I hunt.  Last year was the first time I had a bird gobble half heartedly, to a copper call but he walked away after he gobbled twice. 
When I run the calls they sound good to me yet there must be something that I/we as humans don't here that the turkeys do which they don't like.  I know a lot of people have killed birds with copper calls and I'll keep trying with mine.  However, I don't have any confidence in these calls when I use them that they will produce.
Maybe this season will be different!!

This year will be my first spring in the woods with a copper pot (thank you Mike!). I will let you know how it stacks up

I'm not a fan of metallic surfaces in friction calls.  Theres a certain metallic sound that I pick out from a mile away and it just doesnt register with the "turkey" in my head.  I'll take a rock, ceramic, or glass surface over the metallics any day.

With that being said, tons of turkeys fall to metallic calls each year so they obviously work and some people clearly like them.

Never used one myself. But, I did watch a bunch of them fly off of a man's table at the GN's this year. I think he sold out the first day.

I'm just learning on my first copper pot which I plan to try this spring.  I do like aluminum though.

The more I hunt these birds, the more I believe that they have and recognize individual voices like we do. I keep hearing about how this call is the hottest thing around and that one ain't worth squat. But then someone else will reverse that or both of them produce for them (or neither). So, I'm speculating that if there is a hen on your place that has a voice similar to the sound a copper pot makes, then that pot will produce for you. And if you have a bunch of hens, there's a good chance one of them sounds like that copper pot.

It's funny how many varying opinions that there seem to be. For me, I hate the sound of a slate call. They all sound the same and I can pick them out from any other call, yet that is the most popular call. For those that say they hear the metallic sound in a copper call, then it is not a good copper call. I have made several that have had that sound and I can't stand it and try to keep from them leaving the house. The thing about copper, is that it is extremely difficult to make them sound consistently the same. When you get a good one there is no other surface that can stack up to it. I have heard several different call makers rendition of copper, and in my opinion there are a select few that can produce a quality copper call time in and time out. Like I said, it is hard to get that consistent sound out of every single pot. For me, about 3 in 5 turn out right. Maybe it is something I am doing, but I know when you have a good copper call the only thing to beat it is a box call and that would be close.

I have owned three Copper calls. One is special, only heard sounds like that come out of a select few calls. This call is Copper over acrylic. The second call was copper over slate. Sweet sounds emanated from this call. Unfortunately the call maker in an attempt to hurry things up used the glue he had on hand and not the glue he knew worked. This call came apart on the first creek jump. Made me sick, his replacement has been a total disappointment. I just bought a copper over acrylic from Daryl that is very close in sound to my special call.
No call is 100 % we know that, some calls work and some don't. Classic example, I have a long box that sounds terrible to me. Can't believe I even purchased the dadgum thing. But do turkeys gobble at it? YOU BET I have killed several birds with it when they would gobble at nothing else. That said, I believe they produce and will always have mine in the vest!!!! But it has to be copper over acrylic best combination out there in my biased oppinion. In fact I am coming to the conclusion that acrylic should be the only sound board used in a call. Brings the pop out of the cuts and some sweet roll over!

Copper calls either have it or they don't to my ear.

     I have one from a western callmaker... It doesn't do much for me, but the turkey love the call....Shows ya, what I know....

    I don't care for the high maintenence, either......

The thread is about the sound of a particular surface. Not the difference in callmakers.
