How to select a box call maker?

New to the forum, so here we go.... ;D

I am looking for a custom longbox maker to build a "working" call out of cedar, or even a matching set. There are obviously many very qualified makers on this site and several other forums.  How do you go about selecting a call maker?  How do determine if you like his work over the phone? How do you find and contact them? 
What is a fair price for a longbox?   How long is the wait?     Lamar Williams is on my list for sure...   

I recognize people may not want their contact info posted on the forum so please message me with any phone numbers.  I dont mind spending $ but "I want what I want" if that makes sense...

Search the forums here and PM the maker of any calls that catch your eye then have them play the calls for you. You will know the sound you like when you hear it. There are several here that make a call just like you described but it's one that you will want to pick by sound first if it's a field call.

I jusat got one from each guy *lol* *lol*No seriously just start contacting the many callmakers on this site and some that aren't. They will be more than happy to play their calls for you.  Waiting list is another thing you will have to look at. Lamar Williams is a couple yrs.
 Price is another thing. For a longbox you are looking from 100$ to 250 $ depending on who you choose.If you want some name and #s pm me and I 'll be glad to give you a few

Most makers will happily craft a call to your specifications.  In addition, most stand behind their work and will refund your money or build you another call if your not satisfied.

I dont buy many box calls any longer, but names like Lapp, Dawkins, Mann, Williams, and Bashore come to mind immediately.  I'm sure there are several other makers doing great work but I simply havent kept up..

 I gotta put my 2 cents in....

I have a standard Marlin Watkins box call made in 2001 walnut over poplar and it is awesome.. *gobble*

another somewhat unknown except here on the west coast is a fellow named Bill Baublit, a wanut over walnut, exteremly nice sounding call, do a google for his website if interested, i believe you can contact Marlin on this website....

Thanks again for everyones input.   *up*      I chose to order a boatpaddle from two different call makers on this forum. My decisions were based on the Forum imput ( Hunter22 and Zumer), phone conversations, delivery date and of coarse conversations with the makers. One maker will have the call in two months and another more like 18 months. I really wanted a cedar box but decided to let the makers use the ideal wood for what I wanted. They certainly know more about that than I will ever know. No reason to guide the experts.

Again, thanks for the help. I intentionally omitted the names so not to affend anyone.

 Glad you found some callmakers for the job. Just my 2 cents on the subject.....if you can, travel to some of the shows and actually play some calls...long or shot boxes, and find the call that suits you the best. We all play calls differently and like different sounds. This also helps you put a face w/ a name..all these callmakers are great folks.

A very good way to get to know the callmakers and their calls!!!

Keep us posted and post up when those calls come in.  Several great callmakers all around.  I would have been a lot of help if you'd asked about Osage J/K!
