Here are some pics of my very first pot. Western red cedar over glass with a CA finish. I have been playing around with different methods and just haven't been happy with the results and yesterday I made a mandrel like in BigB's tutorial and got a good one. I got impatient and 3 hours after I glued the sound board I glued the slate in (at 1:30 this morning). It looks better than it sounds In my opinion. It has lower tones and it is tough to get a decent pitch out of it. I need some advice. I have about 1/10 between slate and glass and my sound board pedestal is about 1 1/8 in diameter. I am thinking I need to tighten up that gap but not sure. I wouldn't say it is dead because it has fairly good rasp just real low tones. The best sound I could get out of it was with the carbon striker in the pic.

Pot looks good but the low sounds might be also attributed to the heavy strikers.  Try thinning them down a bit.

Strikers are a good idea as Lou said. But also your sound board is too close. It needs to be about the depth of two pieces of single strength glass. Also be careful with Western Ceday it is very toxic. PM me anytime.

Happy New Year to all and thanks to everyone who offered help and advice in figuring out my new addiction. Just to let you know I made an ash pot for the scrap bin today and a new maple striker. I made the striker with just under a 5/16 diameter and a smaller tip as I was advised and it made a huge difference. It still is a little lower than I would like but I can get some higher pitched yelps on the very outside of the pot. I am pretty confidant that I could sweet talk a needy little jake with it. Not so sure about a wise old tom though. Tomorrow I am going to try one out of cherry and tighten up the gap between the slate and glass a bit and try to get a couple more strikers done. I will be back with a new report.
