a day sculling ducks
« on: December 08, 2010, 12:40:03 PM »
Well, me and 3 of my buddies spent yesterday out on Chickamauga lake in the ole sneak boat. First real trip of the year. We had a bang up time. Didnt see as many as usual, but we made it work anyway. I had to leave my knee pads behind which worried me alot, but I had the sculling boat along. Its fun to set way off and glass floats and pick what you are going to sneak in on, hope you can get through ducks without spooking them to get to your shots. Its kinda like stalking ducks on the water. Only two guys get in the boat at a time to go into them....so you can say we did some rowing all day !!!! We managed to find Canvasbacks, Redheads,Buffle heads, Mallards,Greater and lesser Scaup, and a shover. It was cold but we had a blast.

Ha  ha there Bob---thats right-another day laying on my back.
We did see some struttung birds that day for the record. Ever seen any Ruddy ducks ??? They swim around parading for the females with their tail just like an ole gobbler does---its a sight to see. They actually strut !!! They are really small and do not have their colors this time of year so we never turned on them---we just enjoyed watching them strut their stuff so to soeak.
Its a real neat old school way of hunting.
Here is a pic to see how we do this----we are going in on a flock of canvasbacks here----we are in the middle of coots as we approach the cans.
Look how close you can get with patience!!!---and ya dont even need knee pads Porter !!!

just leaving tender boat on way into a float across bay.....

now another---a guys reaction to his first scull on some greaters and buffies----look at the expression on his face...hahaha

Those are some awesome pics Jeff! I KNOW that would be fun. I bet you are wore out getting that boat around! Man wish I could do that one time!

ya put some miles every time when ya go out---I am the only one that can row/steer the boat. So I am on the oar all the time---its gets to ya but as the season goes on---the ole arm gets stronger. Ya have to kinda row with one arm all the time to keep your arm movement from rowing from being seen.
