First Black Coyote
« on: November 14, 2010, 06:20:57 AM »
Went deer hunting ,in my old home town, with my buddies. As I was waiting for them to turn the dogs lose, I heard what I thought were deer slipping out of the cutover,  man my heart started racing. To my surprise I see a black figure coming thru  the woods towards me about 60 yrds away. At first I thought it might be a black bear, but quickly see it is a black dog. It comes by me at about 40 yrds, never knowing I was ever. It looked just like a good sized black German Shepard! As I watched it, I caught a movement out of the corner of my eye. I see some movement thru the woods but can't make it out. The glimpses I got of it looked to be another dog moving thru the woods. I figured that they were somebody's house dogs.Well about 8-10 minutes later I hear a shot. When I got back to the hunting cabin a friend of mine had a female coyote on his 4-wheeler. He told me a black one came by him first and he thoght it was a black german shepard also, so he didn't shoot. About 30 seconds later the female comes by and he shoots her. He told me he thought for sure that was a black german shepard that came by him at first. He would have never believed it was a coyote if he wouldn't have killed his mate. Anybody else seen a black coyote? Roc

Roc,

I killed one several years ago here in Arkansas. I had the head mounted and the hide tanned. It was a very unusual piece and got a lot oif questions from those who saw it. I ended up giving the mount to a young man who put it on his wall in his bedroom.

I had one run past me while squirrel hunting about five years ago. It was already past when I saw it so no shot.

Have seen several on my hunting lease in Greenbrier Co, W.V. and called in one for my hunting partner about 4 seasons ago. We were turkey hunting that spring and came out of a wood line high above a old strip. Together we spot a black spot in the high green grass 500yds away and the first thought was a gobbler. A quick look through the Binos revealed a coyote pounceing and mouseing the thick grass. As my partner made his way back to the hunting rig for the .223 coyote control, I watched it move in the opposite direction till it was out of site. He returned and I told him to close some of the distance, moving down the hillside about 300yds. I popped a mouthcall in stressed the reeds real tight and started a destressed calling sequence. I saw the coyote pop up about 700yds out and left of the last place I had seen it, and it was coming full steam. It stopped and looked and I called agian, she bolted right for the sounds. A few more calls and she was in his watch pocket and at 50yds he fired. Waching from the high vantage point I though he had missed as the coyote traveled a good 70yds and disapered over a embankment. Upon meeting him at the bottom of the hillsilde we tracked straight to her and found a perfectly placed shot through the chest. How it went that distance I'll never know.  Brian

I've not seen one in the woods or fields , but have seen one on the news . It makes the news about 1-2 times each year for the past few years . It lives right in the heart of suburbia .

Many times a coyote will look darker than he actually is . I ain't saying the yote you saw was not black . The second one I killed back in the mid 90's changed from yellow to black in seconds . I blame it on the angle of the sun and the fact he was hiding in tall soybeans . At the time it happened I thought there were two .
I would like to call in and kill a big old male that is black .

Called in a three legged one on the Rock House Hunt Club several years ago, while Spring turkey hunting (Neil Cost Memorial Hunt).
