good morning to be in the woods
« on: October 31, 2010, 10:28:45 AM »
Checked out that other area this morning.  Someone else got to the spot I was headed to so I went and checked out a spot I see a lot of bird crossing the road at.  Got out of the truck yelped on a trumpet and got an answer on the other side of the road about 75 yards down the draw.  I grabbed the gun and a box call.  Eased into the woods about 75 yards away from the truck hit the box call got an answer right back,  keekee'd on the trumpet and they fired right back at me.  I scratched the leaves some and hit the box and they answered and were closer. So I keekee'd down and away trying to sound like a different turkey and scratched the leaves some more and they came right across the gravel road and was looking for some company so I invited a couple of them to a lead breakfast.

The best part is finding out how turkeys will respond to that box calls.  I wasn't sure how they would take to the higher pitch yelp on the down stroke. The back stroke has alot of gobbler sound. Working the two side at the same time had them hen looking hard for that sound. I'm pretty happy with the results.   Kind of like finding that old pair of shoes you misplaced.   *lol*  Thanks for the kind words. I still have a ways to go but it's sure fun trying to get there.

I fully intend on giving it another test run this weekend. If they open up some spots. this youth hunt weekend and I rather see them kids get the good area. I'll just have to take what's left, maybe it woun't be to bad. Them bucks are start to chase doe's harder and my sons been after me to go chase them.  May go with him.
