Mountain gobbler

I finally escaped into the woods this morning, and it was a beautiful morning to be in the turkey woods. I hiked up over a mountain to get above some birds I had scouted out, halfway up I realized I had forgotten my water bottle, and so upon reaching the top, sat down for a spell to cool off and catch my breath. After a 10 minute rest, I continued and soon found a nice spot to set up. I called a little with the trumpet and heard some birds a long ways off, apparently I had overshot my goal. After sitting there for about an hour, I backtracked heading almost away from the birds and then circled down over a long treacherous hill. I stopped by a big blowdown and called with the trumpet and was answered immediately. Soon I could see a hen coming towards me and she went around the blowdown heading towards my right. I kept watching and keeping the conversation going, and soon I saw a couple  of red heads about 60 yards down the hill. Soon they were engaged in a sparring contest and I got to enjoy quite a show for about what seemed like a half hour. They were wrestling with their necks entwined, something I have seen pictures of but never seen in the woods. I was wishing I had my video camera. I was tempted to ease a little closer, but didn't know where the hen had gone and I knew there were more birds I couldn't see, and kept telling myself to be patient. After a while, I couldn't see the toms anymore, so I slipped my long box out of my vest and yelped. A hen answered and I matched her word for word and one more. Everything seemed to go quiet. I waited and then called again on the trumpet and I saw the toms coming up the hill. I heard a hen to my right almost behind me and I was sure I was going to get busted by the hens. The toms were heading towards a deer trail where I had my gun trained, and when the first tom stepped out into the clear, the Lefever spoke. The tom flopped and started rolling down the side of the mountain, so the chase was on. I finally caught up with him, and spent a moment giving thanks for such a fine morning in the turkey woods, and the harvest of a fine mountain gobbler.
