http://blog.syracuse.com/outdoors/2010/10/homer_man_gets_his_fall_gobble.htmlSaturday evening, I finally caught up with a fall gobbler I have been chasing on and off since the season began on October 1st. I had been chasing the flock of gobblers (three longbeards) on our lease in the town of Solon. Problem was they were spending most of their time just off the lease, and roosting close too, but not on the northern edge of the lease. Saturday afternoon, I spotted them again way down low along a field, again off the lease. This time there were just two gobblers. In between wind gusts, I would coarse yelp at them with a funky old box call I carry for such occasions in the fall. After 6 or 7 series of calls (over the course of 30 minutes), they finally turned upward and headed in my direction. As they closed the gap to 35 yards, I dropped the hammer on the largest one. Nearly doubled on both gobblers, but the 2nd gobbler took off in a dead run at the shot, and exited stage right before I could pick him up in my holosight. The gobbler weighed 18lbs 9oz, swung a 10-58” beard, and sported 1” & 15/16” spurs. The gobbler was molting tail feathers, so the tail fan feathers were all different lengths. Solid 2-1/2 year old gobbler. Real treat to get one in the fall. Rest of the season I’ll be concentrating on getting another one over my two weimeraners, Abby & Jake.
