Yep. The first one Neil saw was in Lamar's shop, made by Lamar. A lot of people think the Do-Dat was Neil's creation.

Great call Jeff . It sure came out nice .
Lamar told me first-hand that he built the first call similiar to the Do Dat . It was actually called a "paddlebox call". Neil liked the design of it so much that he went home and designed one of his own. Neil crafted his to look like a small boat paddle , while Lamar's resembles a boxcall with a handle on it. Lamar talked about Neil's quick wit and sense of humor as he told me the origin of the name Do Dat . One day , Neil's housekeeper ( a black woman from SC) pointed to the new call and said " Mr Neil , what do dat thing do ?"  So Neil promptly nicknamed it the Do Dat . Steve mann makes his version of the Do Dat also , with Neil's approval. Lamar's call , while it is physically different from Neil's , is definately the fore-runner of the Do Dat . Chronologically it was Lamar's call first (The Paddlebox call) , then Neil's Do Dat and then Steve mann who is sill making a limited number of them .
What a sense of humor ! Lamar always said that Neil had wit as fast as a machine gun.

Talked to ole Lamar yestarday. He told me about his first one. It is just as you described Bob.....a call with a handle on it. He is considering doing a limited edition maybe of them to the guys on his limited list. Hope he follows through with those plans---that would be cool !!!

Mike Lapp, also did a Do-Dat in his L/E set of calls. Another Do-Dat style call was done by Marlin Watkins. Not sure how many were done but he graced me w/ several.
