For the last couple of months I have been working on some remodeling jobs out of town, the hard work and the heat left me exhausted and therefore I hadn't been in the shop much. That has now come to an end so I should be able to spend more time working on calls. This past week I turned a couple of trumpets, some deer calls also, they are in the finishing stages now, and just got some lanyard cord Friday. I will post pictures later of those projects when finished.
A while back, I commented to Charlie, that if he was bored he could make me a Snakewood over Monkey Pod (or something exotic,) Turpin call, he responded with "Do you know how much they are getting for Snakewood these days?" It had been a while since I had priced any, but he was right.
I had some Snakewood I purchased about 2 years ago in the shop and some Hawaiian Koa, so I decided to try my hand and make my own. It has been over a year at least since I made a Turpin call, so I figured it was time. It is the second one I have made with a handle, the first one was carved as I didn't have a lathe at the time, and turning it was a whole new experience.
I am pleased with the way this one turned out, and will hunt with it. I am not planning on making these in the near future, they are way too much work and I have more pressing things to do with my time right now. I do like the way these calls sound and the versatility, but a long box is much easier to build, for me at least! Thanks for bearing with me, and looking, critiques welcome. Dave
