That is a cut piece of construction safety earplug. It is very duriable. It gives the box a sweeter and smoother front end, but still keeping a good break. To tell you the truth, it sounded all right. I think with the inconistences in the wood of both the walnut and cedar(especially the white wood in the lid) hurt the sound quality. I am sure it would call a turkey up, in the right situation. Thanks! Roc

Mr. Sharpe, usually I can't get the sound quality I would like out of these burls, but it still didn't sound too bad. Also, all that white wood in the lid didn't help. Sometimes these burls will surprise you. Like the last maple burl box I made, it sounded real good. I was surprised for sure. Can't remember who I got this walnut from, should have got a truck load. That's a real disparaging post you made there considering that you are the callmaker.  We know that burls are not the best choice for making boxcalls because of the inconsistency in the sound but they do make for a pretty call.  We also know that sometimes pretty calls don't always call in birds.  I feel that you did yourself and the buyer of that call a misjustice by selling it.  You knew that it didn't sound good and yet you chose to sell it.  
Hopefully for your sake the buyer doesn't know much about what a good turkey call should sound like.  If he does your rep has been hurt considerably.

The above line is especially disconcerning in that you would have that kind of mentality.  We all know that just about any call will call up a turkey in the right situation but I wouldn't wnat one of your calls because of your thinking.  I can't wait for all the planets and the stars to line up correctly to have a particular call work on that given day.  
I have to say that you are on the wrong path to become a good callmaker...your post seems to solidify my comment.

I guess the bottom line is...why would you send out a call that you know doesn't sound good?  
Before you/anyone else gets upset with my post, I'm just trying to figure out why something like this would happen and it also goes back to an earlier thread on publicly critiquing calls.  I feel that it is fair for me to comment and ask questions due to the fact that the call was critiqued by the callmaker himself.

i concur.  letinemfly raises a very valid point here.  why would you sell something that isn't up to snuff?  in the end, it's your reputation that is on the line, so you can do as you choose.   but if it were me, that call would not have left the shop if it only sounded "alright".

In my reference to the right situation, that was more of a joke. I never said my call sounded bad. I have trashed many a call, one just like that one, because they didn't sound up to my standards. Also, that call was made more for a decorative call and not a hunting call. Also, I explained my point to the buyer, about the call and it's sound before and again after he bought it. When he got it, he said he didn't know why I  was worried about the call. He said he would hunt with it, but it was too pretty. He said most of the calls he had weren't even close to the sound of that call. I have never had anybody complain about my calls.  I then sold him one of my shorty hunting boxes, and he really loved that. That is the last thing I would do, and ruin my rep. And for you not buying any of my calls, I really don't care. You don't put food on my table and I sure eat good. Why do you have to be so critical of people and things when you don't even know the whole story? Take a chill pill,Jack!!! I'm very chilled.  My comments are based on your post and if there's more to the story maybe you should have posted it.
My comments weren't a critique of your call, YOU did that!!  I'm not a callmaker but if I were my calls would be the best that they possibly could be in respect to my talent, as I'm sure yours are.
Perhaps you should show more diligence in your posts and word them more carefully because I'm not the only one that thought what I said.  Also being new on here you might want the members on here to get to know you a bit better before making posts like you just did on here.  We don't know if you were joking but I have to believe that you weren't or you wouldn't have said what you did about the call.

Well all I can say to you, is put your money where your mouth is, and start making calls yourself. I am sure all your calls would sound so good, they would call a frozen turkey out of a Foodlion.
