I am not a pro by know means, but you said hunting boxes.. I choose a box that sounds good to use for hunting not one that is a hit and miss..However hens mess up all the time and never all sound the same, just as most callers.
That being said does the angel of the lid bettwen the diffferant kinds of boxs change or does one have a spring in the screw and lid and some not.
The ones with spring has been my experiance the angle of the lid has to be more perfect due to your limited ability to turn the lid down or angle it to get the desired sound. Making tuneing them a little more presice.
The ones with out the screw will give you more of a movable lid to tilt or angle down to give the disired sound.
JMO on what i have seen.
I never purr on a box, when I am purring and clucking they are usually at 100 or closer. The box is sitting on the ground and I do it with a mouth call.
I do not agree with LH, hens do not "mess up all the time." Matter of fact, they probably rarely mess up. Now, we might have a preconceived notion of how they are supposed to sound but that is all together different.
My favorite line from the average turkey hunter is, "the worst turkey sound I ever heard came from a hen." That line usually follows some awful call work. My response is, "it might not have sounded good to you, but I bet she sounded REAL."
