just remember----what I used tended to be a little deeper in color than Charlie's----I kinda like his color better. But no more than that stuff costs---its worth a try for ya man

the stain is refered to as "aqua fortis" you can look up the recipe on the net........it can be noxious to create......but a simple version is

combine cider vinegar and very old rusty barbwire.....let is set for several months....apply,  let dry and sand the raised grain...repeat till the desired stain is accomplished....

i tyed it with a 50/50 mix of water and vineger with steel wool...let it set for a week and tested it out...i done a sycamore pot and maple pot..they both had a greenish grey color to em...the longer it sits the darker it got..also i have heard that different types of vineger will give diff. colors...

I've got a group of 9 that I am working on, I know I am not going to wait a week using an acid stain on these.  There is one in the mix, all you need is some reflector yellow paint on it, and let it fly.

let me correct my self...i let the mix sit for a week...i just wiped it on and let it sit a few seconds then wiped it dry...i used multiple coats to get the desired look...

Potassium Permanganate mixed with water also is a very good stain for Tiger Maple.

got a question---does it give you a more goldish color than the acquafortis I am using that tends to be darker brownish in the stripes

Potassium Permanganate is a purple liquid that turns wood a golden brown. The more coats the darker it gets. A lot of custom muzzleloader makers use it to stain their maple stocks. Mose made me an owl hooter and crow call out of birds eye maple that turned out well. I'll try to find a picture to post tomorrow.

If you know someone that works in water treatment they might be able to get you some. A little goes a long way.

Got mine from a buddy but if you know someone that works in a water treatment, power plant, steel mill they may be able to get you some.  WEAR RUBBER GLOVES. IT WILL STAIN YOUR HANDS.
