Cutting slate

what's the best way for me to cut some slate? Can I use a jig saw or scroll saw? I don't want to jack it up

Be careful of the dust. Don't breathe it.
For small pieces I used a hacksaw. Go slow.
You can  split it with a sharp wood chisel. Tap the chisel lightly, all the way around.
To smooth the split surface, wet a concrete sidewalk and rub in a circular motion. Find a smoother patch then move to wet dry paper.  I have cut, split and smoothed flooring tiles for calls.

I found slate chalkboards for $3 each 8"X12". I'm gonna give this a whirl

I think most slate for calls is about 0.080".
It is fun to do one or two that way but for more i'd call Stumpy or one of the other companies out there.

I bought one just to check it out. I matched it up to some pieces I bought from Brookside. They are very close in thickness. I needed a longer piece than I've been able to get from anyone and nobody that sold it would cut a single piece for me. I'm thinking this will work for finishing this call that has been sitting on my desk for months now.

Shad, like James said a tile saw with a diamond blade (wet) is best.

Hey, I use a tile saw. when I cut slate. Steve has a couple of his teeath on his dentures sharpened, and uses that. Dont let him fool you, If it sounds like a good idea, I probably told him about it first.
