Is there a perfect material for the strike surface?

... the callmaker that turned & tuned the individual pot (& striker) has more to do with a great soundin' "top shelf" caller, than does the type of surface ... :-\

... & then again, there's always "the nut behind the bolt" factor ... ;)

Semantics..........from the Greek "σημαντικός" ie... to achieve a desired effect on an audience especially through the use of words with novel or dual meanings. If you mean it's more the "nut" behind the striker playing the pot....

Pot construction is not tuning....surface preparation is not tuning.... striker preparation is not tuning....pot construction is basic engineering.

Tune:(noun) ......archaic : quality of sound : tone, either it has it or it doesn't. When a pot builder achieves the proper construction specifications the pot will, THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME , YIELD A CALL GOOD CALL. There is still the wild card of wood variances and surface material quality.

I Think Mike has a great point far as tuning goes with pots, it sure is in the construction(basic engineering) of the call. I may have to rethink the thought that I had tuned over a thousand duck calls in my life, maybe I wasnt tuning, maybe I was altering the construction of the call (basic engineering)

You know guys, everyone has their opinions and I've built a few pot calls. Don't claim to be the best at it either. BUT, in my humble opinion, if the pot dimensions, hole patterns, glue used, etc. aren't consistent from pot to pot, not much tuning can be done after they are glued up. Except for trying different strikers, or tearing the pot apart and putting it back on the lathe. So, if the dimensions were right for the wood being used, as kept in notes, the pot is either good or not so good. Strikers will definitely change the sound quite a bit, but that's more matching than tuning.  JMO.

First of all I have a big problem with folks dragging quotes from other forums over here to Osage Roost.  That is not what this forum is about and I believe others will agree.

I like glass as my choice of surfaces.

Ok on the topic of tuning pot calls.  Al Shoemaker hit the nail on the head....Once a pot call is assembled, there is no tuning that can be done.  In some rare cases, if someone trys to "salvage" a call, which I have done, and if this is done right, you can have a good sounding call without sacraficing the craftsmanship. (Reference my NRA pot call post)...But this was not a tuning process and like Al said strikers will sound different on the same call....It is a matching issue.......My opinion, a striker will make or break a call's sound.........It's all in the callmaker's documented dimensions and wood choices.............Nut shell...there is no tuning of pot calls.

... well I guess when someone takes someone's words & throws their own twist on it, this can be where you end up ... :-\

In a previous post I mentioned the word "tuned" in reference to a pot call ...

For M Mims or S Maddox to think; or suggest; that I was referrin' to the tunin' of a "glued & completed" pot call; as in the tunin' of a box call; is something that I can't help but find humorous ... ;)

I will however have to say that I do believe that a top shelf pot call is indeed a "tuned" caller, one that is tuned by the callmaker; & to his ear; in the design process of the call ...

I have talked with many fine pot callmakers that when they started to design their pots, they built the 1st one, & then they built a 2nd, a 3rd, ect... to ultimately come up with the sound & tonal qualities they were trying to achieve from the call ...
... the changing & altering of the original pot to produce a different sound, tone, break, ect... is in my opinion the "tuning" of the finished call design ...

I believe that all turkey calls are indeed tuned; to one degree or another; with obviously just some better than others ... 8)
