"A strange bump behind the blind"

I'ts Friday and I made it through this hot week.  Working on calls very little now, as it is so hot.  Thought I would post another story for the weekend, do Friday reports, and slip off to Cooper Chute to catch a few fish.  This is a duck hunting story that happened to my son.

I don’t remember the year, but it had to be about a dozen or so ago.  We were having the best year at our club ever.  The River was down,  and  water was low everywhere from South La to the upper Ms. Valley.  We had water and we had ducks.  Just when the shooting would slow up a little, we would get a front that would be just short of freeze up and the shooting was back on.

Well the freeze up came and it had just started to thaw out.  That morning a couple of members and I had our usual limit hunt and about the time that I was picking up the last few ducks, I heard a paddle bump a boat southwest of our blind back in the Cypress.   I made a note that that was the only sound I heard, and it did not sound like the members in the adjacent club.   They were not the one bump type when moving through the cypress.

The next morning my son and a friend of his were going to hunt the Mallard Motel since they had just gotten off for the Christmas holidays from Ms State.   It was mid week and I had to work, but I told him that I heard a bump behind the blind, and no matter how hot the shooting gets, to stay legal as we always did.   Well the ducks were thick as smoke rising.

The wind had changed from the NE to the SSW and the ducks were coming from back right of the blind, sailing over the blind and over shooting the decoys.   It was a tough shooting situation for young guns.

After shooting almost out of shells, a limit was had, and they departed to Greenville for the usual afternoon nap at our home before heading to Doe’s (A famous steak place in Greenville started by Doe Signa), and late night.  Upon entering Doe’s a duck hunter that my son knew came up and said.  Well I understand that ya’ll killed 5 gadwals, 1 greenwing teal, 4 greenheads, and 2 hens.   When my son heard this he said, we haven’t talked to a soul since our hunt this AM. -  How did you know that???   The duck hunter replied.  Mr. Pillgreen (A federal Warden)  filmed ya’ll this AM.   -------------- He said,  “That was the worst case of waterfowl shooting that I have ever witnessed.  It was a pure waste of ammunition and film.“

That is a good story! Embarrassed and surprised at the same time.

Thanks John
