"A White John Dillenger"

My dad was a Lt. Col. orthopedic surgeon stationed at Fork Polk, La. during WWII.  He once told me he did more knee operations during that time than a normal orthopedic does in an entire career. -  He grew up in around the Panther Creek Swamps near Yazoo City, Ms. when he was a boy and loved to fish.  --  During his time in La during the war he had a favorite lake that he loved to bass fish on, Black Lake.   He also had a favorite cajun paddler on the lake named Mr. Lacure.  One particular day he was using a white John Dillenger made by heddon.  This was a subsurface lure with topwater spinner in front and behind.   My dad had fished from daylight and was not having much luck on the dillenger.  He had been fishing it underneath the surface as usual when he noticed a bass move in another spot.  He started reeling real fast to get the bait recast to the spotted moving fish.  When he was reeling the bait in real fast, the bait came to the surface like a buzz bait with spinners tearing up the water.   As it came back near a tree, a waiting bass tore it up.  --  Alas, he had discovered the secret that all bass fisherman look for, THE PATTERN.  A buzz bait technique, back when there were no buzz baits on the market.  -- So he started fishing the newly discoverd pattern and began to tear um up!  Later that A.M. he ran up on an aquaintence that also fished the Black Lake regularly.  He came up on my dad and said "How ya doing Doc, you had any luck?"  With that statement, dad turned to Mr. Lucre and said "Mr. Lacure would you hold up those fish for the gentleman to see.  Mr. LaCures stood up and held up two stringers, one in each arm, loaded with bass.  The limit back then was 25.  The fishrerman said, "My Gosh Doc, what are you catching them on? "   My dad said, "A white John Dillenger".   The fisherman said, "Well that's a #@!!* lie Doc, cause I have been using one all morning and only have two fish to show for it.  Dad sees a fish boil while he is talking, and says.  "Maybe you are not presenting it to them right."  He says, "What do mean".  With that dad throws out past the moving fish and states, "Raise your rod tip high, real real fast, and about the time that the bait comes by the tree----with that the bass explodes on the dillinger while dad is performing the manuever---- "A bass can't resist those sputtering spinners and explodes on the bait."   With that the fisherman said.  " Excuse me for calling you a liar Doc".

Great story John! Love the adrenalin rush when they hit a top water lure!

Another good one, Jake  *cheers*  Don't know as I ever used a john dillinger...but back in those days all us kids used cane poles or peeled saplings and worms..My dad had a split bamboo casting rod with a reel..started fly fishing when dad was stationed in Newfoundland in the early 50's ( everybody there, young and old, fly fished)...so many trout in the lakes and streams up there back then that the locals  always tied multiple flies at intervals along the leader..wasn't unusual to catch more than one at a time..when someone said that they had caught " three or four" they meant 3 or 4 dozen on an afternoon.
