Story of an Ol'Call
« on: June 24, 2010, 07:15:13 PM »
I guess it depends on who a body talks to whether this is history or just a story from my point of view.

I wasn't old enough to drive yet, (pre 1978) I had been walking to the woods or riding with friends to go hunting before school. My uncle Bucky called me the evening before. He ask if I wanted to go hunt'n with him in the morning. I of course jumped at the chance. I knew he went up on the river, (Upper Jacks Fork) and I had been deer hunting up there since 1969. I was born in 63 so you do the math. The next morning I was waiting when he pulled up the drive. He had this ol'call in a sock laying in the seat. We got in the woods about right and the turkeys started. We went to the closest one and he drug this ol'long call out of the sock and hit it. It was the sweetest sounding young hen I had ever heard. To save time and space on this post, that was my first turkey. This Ol'Call was the instrument of two first turkeys. Cecil Fry called my uncle and told him he had a left handed call and knew he was left handed and to come get it. I'm not sure what year that was but we're figuring in the late 60's or early 70's. He had been using the call several years before I benefited from it's tone. This call don't amount to much in most peoples standards but it is priceless to me. It's not a certain length, width or height. It's just an old call that has called more turkeys than most people will hear in a lifetime. My uncle can't get around real well anymore and mostly fishes. He knew I was making calls and gave his old call to me to add with my other old calls from the local call makers. Here are a couple pics. Side note,,,,,,,,That is the original sock ;)

One of those old roll your own turkey killers, nice story and history behind that one, not to mention some fine memories! Nice looking old growth wood as well, some pretty tight growth rings, must have been some cold winters!

David that is an amazing story there and thanks for sharing that caller and that old sock :)  I love seeing all of these old callers.

Augiedog and I were very fortunate to both get to play that call and it still has the capability of taking many birds!

Unreal story Dave and  great call that is obviously pricless to you. Still having the same sok it was stored and carried in makes it special too.
Never loose that one man---that has way too many priceless memories attached to it .
Congrats on calling it yours now !!!!
