The "Bachelor of Camp Ridge" bites the dust!
« on: April 28, 2010, 01:30:40 PM »

This morning I hiked out of camp to the middle of the ridge above camp and set up on our western fence line in a meadow of bluebonnets. I heard all three gobblers I knew hung around this area, but they were in different directions. Comfortable with my set up, I decided to stay put and call them to me. I started with some soft tree calls from my Buice rosewood trumpet and got an excited response from a Tom over the ridge. I then decided to do a fly down cackle with my Kraus honey locust glass pot. The Tom answered with a series of gobblers as I flapped my hat against my leg. After 15 minutes of silence, I broke out my Shoemaker black limba and walnut brick-checked box. A three note yelp told me the Tom was on his way. He seemed to wander to my left, so I slid around and purred on the box. Nothing else was needed - his head blocked my wad perfectly at 25 yards at 6:58AM! He weighed 20 1/2lbs., 10 1/8" beard and 7/8" sharp spurs.

Thanks everyone! I am having a blast this season. This morning around 9AM I had a coyote come into my calling, but he got nervous around the 70 yard mark. Not wanting to miss an opportunity to smoke a 'yote, I let a load of Nitro triplex fly - rolled him! Too cool.
