3 items, that make you a better turkey hunter
« on: April 25, 2010, 08:20:00 AM »
What 3-4-5 things do you feel make you a better turkey hunter??

     1. Understanding the habits of the wild turkey.....
     2. Understanding the complex langage of the wild turkey.
     3. 3 P's..Patience, Persistence, and more patience.
     4. Practice time spent running all the different calls, I plan to use.....
     5. Being able to hunt where there is allot of turkeys....
     6. Good set-ups

   3 Most common mistakes:

     1. Call to much and call to loud.
     2. Poor choice of set-ups.
     3. Feeling the need/pressure to kill a turkey, rather then enjoying the hunt....

3 things I always try to work on every season:

1.  Remember that turkeys don't wear wrist watches.
2.  Remember that even when he stops gobbling, he still exists.
3.  Take at least five more seconds to pick a better setup, and then sit still longer.

3 mistakes I typically repeat:

1.  I think turkeys have schedules.
2.  I think he disappears into thin air as soon as he quits gobbling.
3.  I can be impatient...

Zumer,

Well stated. I would guess that 90% of the turkeys I kill I do when I am by myself. I have asked why thay is and I think the answer is that I hunt differently when I am alone. I do things slower. I sit longer. I sit back and smell the roses. Patience for me is the key in turkey hunting.

I FEEL THE SAME WAY, I THINK I HUNT BETTER BY MYSELF TOO! IF YOU KNOW THE AREA YOU ARE HUNTING AND YOU SPEND TIME SCOUTING, YOU CAN GET AROUND THINGS THAT MIGHT MESS UP PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW THE LAND! PATIENCE, I THINK, IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER!

I agree with all that's been said. Only thing I can think of to toss in is LUCK, LUCK, and more LUCK. Something that we haven't had lots of yet this year..  ROTFLMBO

Seems like turkeys are always willing to break rule #1, regardless of what you think rule #1 may be.

I got bit by #2 in common mistakes on Thursday.  Didn't have much choice.  Was easing toward another gobbler and this one fired off.  I was right in the middle of a logged area and had a ring of down cedars and tree tops around me.  I thought I could make the bird come up the cow path... not sure what I was thinking :)  It's hard to watch the bird at 5 yards and not have a clear shot.  It was very fun and I was soaked!

All of these are great tips and as Rickey stated... Patience!  Birds here are being stubborn, but being Persistent I hope will pay off!

Tip for turkey hunting.-Don't forget the toilet paper! Could do a whole comic routine concerning this topic. Stopped many a time early in the morning and got coffee that had been "brewing" since 11 p.m. the prior evening. My hunting area is about forty five minutes drive and the speed limit has been exceded several times trying to get to my spot before the "move" kicked in. One last tip when this happens- Face into the wind! *aah* *aah* *aah* *aah*. Oh and Zips  BD BD BD! you old fart!
