Fall Turkey Hunters
« on: April 25, 2010, 04:05:23 AM »
I know that there is a special board for this topic, but I was looking over there and saw that it hasn't had many hits in a while. I was wondering how many of you members actually fall hunt? Georgia doesn't have a fall season, so I will be looking else were to get a hunt or two in. Ive never fall hunted, but would like to. Just curious how many of you get in to it as much as the spring addiction. Thanks y'all

MOST OF THE TIME IT TAKES alot of walking to find a flock, then you bust them up, and call them back! When you get to that point it can get pretty exciting! Plus fall is a good time to help cut down some aggrevation, by taking a couple hens out! It seems, up here in PA, that less people are hunting fall birds. I'm not sure if it is because archery is in or what, but there's not nearly the hype for fall as there is for spring! Maybe, one fall you can get up here and get into them! *up*

Doug,

Falling hunting is awesome.....There is allot action, when you can find the birds & break them properly. I hunt out with Marlin Watkins, whom has an awesome turkey dog named Kee-kee...Talk about fun....The dog saves allot of mileage on us older folks......

Here in Pa., we have a 4 week season, so I can scout for deer, while I'm turkey hunting.... The leaves are changing during or may even be down duuring our fall season...The woods smell great, there's a chill in the air....even have snow flurries.....No snakes to worry about, The ruts on, bear are everywhere fatting up for the upcoming winter's nap & not near as many guys hunting fall birds like spring.....Matter of fact, most are bow hunting and you have the big woods to yourslf... *bannana*

In the fall, when flocks are broken, you get to hear a vast array of turkey talk.......The birds of the year do allot of kee-kee's and kee-kee runs... Runs are yelps after the kee-kee's. Young hen talk, ole' hen assembly yelps, lots of clucking, jakes doing kee-kee runs and may even add a short chopped off gobble in there as well...My favorite for fall hunting is gobblers.....Difficult to find, then break up, but worth every second of your time invested to do so, when you harvest a grand ole' gobbler.....

If you get the chance to fall hunt.....JUMP ON IT!!!

I think I enjoy fall hunting more than Spring.  It's a different beast, but it's as much fun (if not more!).  I'm wanting to hunt over dogs one day too.  I talked to Marlin for hours one night about fall hunting.  Read his stories and you'll fall in love with fall season :)

Lots of good info in there and lots of ways to hunt in the fall, but it sure is nice to get out there :)

Yep -- just like Zumer said.  I love the fall hunt as much as the spring, just for different reasons.

Breaking a flock can be so exciting -- lots of different turkey vocalizations, its one of the greatest things in the fall woods.

I love to hunt turkeys in the fall just as much as in the spring. In fact, this year will be even better for me now that I have a Byrne turkey dog of my own. Can't wait to get him out there on some birds....practice starts in August/Sept! *up*

My knowledge of HOW to hunt fall birds was slow in coming . But, with a little persistance it's coming along real nice .
I have only broke one flock of bird ,,,,,,,,,,,it was on private land and I did it after playing with the flock for about a half hour . The break wasn't too bad . Birds went in several directions . I set up and began calling and immediately got return keekee's . I let them two come in and bust me. Moved out the ridge and started calling again . Two more come a running . I didn't kill any though I could have at several different times during the encounter .
I target longbeards by footwork , listening early in the morning, and simply put ,,,covering a lot of ground .  Fall season will reveal things that will never be seen nor heard during a spring season .
I like fall more than spring ,,,,but I'm glad to have both . Our spring season in Ohio is 4 weeks . Fall is seven weeks .
I could go on and on .
If Ohio ever ups the fall limit , and I'm physically able , I'll try to get a dog . I can see ,without having any turkey dog experience of my own , how a dog would be a great asset to an old man.

''To trick an old longbeard, while he searches for food,
he'll not likely come to a jake , jenny, or brood .
He'll take the company of gobblers ; toms his own age ,
or amble alone , across his home range .
To catch him alone on a limb in the even,
and be back by dawn to try to deceive him .
To strike up some talk ; coarse cluck or a yelp,
or a long four stroke scratch ;it could only help.
Or maybe that purr of aggression and fight,
it might be the call that brings him in sight.
His desire to be boss; it might be his weakness,
he won't likely ignore an intruder with meakness.''

I get a bigger thrill out of talking with gobblers in the fall .

We do not fall turkey much here, due to the time of it.  It coincides with The best time in archery (rut). so we just don't bother unless we had already connected on a buck.  I have had them fly up around me just about every archery season and haven't went after them.

It's nice to wake up with them in the morning archery hunt too. *up*

I've hunted turkey's at times during the fall season in NY but this past fall I really gave it my all and had an awesome time doing it. I think you will work a little harder to get a bird especially if you don't have a dog. I also think you take more time to get in tune with the sounds around you and take your time as you move through the woods. I believe the time spent fall hunting last year made me a better hunter and I know for fact that I loved every minute of it. Bill
