my fathers 2009 bird

this will be a little long probably...

I hadnt hunted for a few years as i had moved about an hour away from home and had other intrests. the summer of 2007 something came over me and i NEEDED to start hunting again. The spring of 2008 came and I really wanted to learn to call my own birds and become a real turkey hunter. There is one spot that always has birds in it, my father and I had been duped by them every year. I wanted to get a bird out of there and i ended up calling up two jakes and shot one.

Well fast foward to 2009 my goal was to call a long beard in for the old man. I scouted the powerline spot a week before season and i watched 6 strutters, lots of hens,a lone long beard and 4 jakes. this was right after flydown and they were headed down. We always try getting them to come up the hill.... well i had a plan

we went in the night before opening day and listend they were there.

opening morning I take a logging road that loops way around and ends up in the bottom of the powerline. we get settled in at the base of the tree we picked out a couple days before. when it gets to gobbling time the woods lit up... i was justa smiling

the birds were close.. probably 60-70 yards. I hadnt made a peep to them yet. they all flew down and i stayed quiet just watching to see what they were up to.
after probably 15 minutes it looked as though they were drifting  away. I let out some excited yelps and clucks and the strutter turned and slowly headed our way.
he stopped about 40 yards out and dad let him have it.

ive never been happier.  *ride*
