11-87 patterning trouble

 Ive got a buddy with a new 11-87 we are trying to get set up for turk season.  On my suggestion from reading here and a couple of other places he bought a PG .670, hevy13 #6's 3" 2 oz shot.  Seemed to be the most popular combo I read about for that gun. 
 Best he can do at 40 yards is 42 in a 10" circle....what would cause such low numbers?
 The gun was clean before he started, he shot from a rest, he is an experienced shooter. The only thing I dont know is how big of a target he shot at. Im wondering if he isnt seeing the impact of the majority of his pattern because he shot at a small target?

You may want to have him polish his barrel...

     .670 for 6 shot seems a liitle open for me.....

     Call Bill @ Pure Gold and ask his advice for the proper choke w/ the type of shell, he's shooting....

What they said....go to Lowes and get a roll of contractors paper and cut 30" X 30" squares so you can see the whole pattern.

Bigger target and also have him buy a box of Federal  MAG.Shok Heavyweight turkey loads in the new 7 shot.  Its $$$   $25 for 5 shells.  But it is Very impressive.

Your Buddy should switch to a .665 constrriction  and try a different type of ammo. Indian Creek makes a fine choke tube that will definately improve his pattern. I recommend the Federal hevi weight ammo. In all actuality , 42 pellets inside of a 10 inch circle at 40 yds. is not terribly bad.   

I'm not sure about the wad in in the Fed Hevi's.....but you CAN'T use the Fed "flight control" wad in with ANY ported choke.   I realize the different opinions on pellet count...but in my opinion 42 in the 10" @ 40 yards is horrible.  The "standard minimum" is usually 100 pellets in a 10" @ 40 yards.  This will insure a clean kill if the shooter does his/her job.  Best of luck

 I had him come over last night and he was indeed shooting at a paper plate at 40 yards when he got the low numbers.
 We didnt do a pellet count last night on his but my Encore was shooting 170's @ 40 and his pattern although shooting low made my pattern look loose.  Thanks for the input and help.

Glad you figured it out.  I always shoot at @ a 3x3 area...  Never know what it's doing shooting at such a small target
