Back from SC
« on: April 11, 2010, 02:05:39 PM »
I am back home from my hunting trip to SC.
I have been hunting turkeys for over 30 years and I am not complaining because I have shot my fair share of birds over the years but this without a doubt was the worst hunting trip I have ever been on. I hunted 7 of the 9 days I was allowed and never had a bird respond to my locator calls or my turkey sounds. I have had this happen on single days but never on a trip of several days. This all occured on public land.
I talked to other hunters and they expressed to me that they were having the same problems. The SCDNR web site said the turkey count was down this spring but I am sure there was a gobbler somewhere near my calling.
I saw only 2 birds the whole time I was there and they were hens along side the highway between the lake house and where we hunted.
My trip, other than hunting, was excellent. I spent time with my brother and 3 great friends.
Complete line of turkey, locator, deer and squirrel calls.

I'm sorry you had a rough time, I've had the occasion to eat tag soup more than I care to think about.  Its those few hunts that go great that keep us heading out each Spring.

Those kinda hunts hurt! But it's still good to be with friends and nature! Better next time Gene!

Where are you hunting in SC?  I live in McCormick county and the birds have been better than the past two years.

TLSelf,
I was hunting in around Abbeville and Greenwood counties. I have hunted down there for around 30 years and this is the first time it has happened like this. We did see a lot of hog sign and some have told me that once they move in turkeys move out. I don't know about that tho.

Callmaker, I am north now just waiting on the WV season to come in. Sure hope it is better.

Abbeville and Greenwood are just a stones throw away.  Look me up next year if you come back.
