1st Alabama bird
« on: March 30, 2010, 03:29:34 PM »
I got to the camp on Fri. night for a Sat. morn hunt.  At daylight I heard one gobble at the creek behind me.  but knew I could'nt make it there before he flew down so I made my way toward him stopping a few times to do some blind calling.  About 8:30  I had worked my way to the other side of the creek that I had heard the morning gobbler fire off from that AM.  I set up in a pinch point where they like to funnel through.  and set up to see if I could find him.  He didn't respond to anything.  I sat there for an hour or so.  I knew that I was going to have to leave to be back in Fl for a wedding we were supposed to go to.  I decided to hit a box call, and when I did he gobbled back 1 time.  He was close.  I got ready for him to step into view any second when I saw him and another longbeard come into view about 30 yrd out.  The one gobbler got between me and a huge Oak tree where he proceeded to strut and drum for 20 to 25 min.  Man I was really ready for him to step out from behind that tree.  I saw the subordinate gobbler break and start to come in so I got ready for him.  He startd to finally come in and after 7 or 8 yrds he caught me tracking him.  He died @ 23 steps.  I'm really begining to like this 20 ga.
